Milwood Elementary 1st grade

Math Lesson
Common Core:
M.UN.01.04 Identify the different denominations of coins and bills.
N.ME.01.02 Count to 100 by 1s, 2s, 5s, and 10s, starting from any
number in the sequence; count to 500 by 100s and 10s; use ordinals to
identify position in a sequence, e.g., 1st, 2nd, 3rd.
N.Me.01.07 Compose and decompose numbers through 30, including using
bundles of tens and units, e.g., recognize 24 as 2 tens and 4 ones, 10 and 10
and 4, 20 and 4, and 24 ones.
N.MR.01.10 Model addition and subtraction for numbers through 30 for a
given contextual situation using objects or pictures; explain in words; record
using numbers and symbols; solve.
N.MR.01.13 Apply knowledge of fact families to solve simple open
sentences for addition and subtraction, such as: _+2=7 and 10-_=6.
Unit Outcome:
TLW: demonstrate their knowledge of base ten by solving number sentences.
TLW: use number sense to figure out the digit to make the number sentence
true.
TLW: estimate the sum by rounding both addends to the largest digits, then
add the rounded numbers together.
Rational/Purpose of the Lesson:
The students will be able to use their prior knowledge of rounding and base
ten to find the sum of the addition sentences.
Assessment:
Use the students worksheet and class discussion, to assess the students
ability to know mathematical problems.
Resources/Materials Required:

White bored/markers/eraser
Computer- Compass Odyssey
Clipboards
Pencils
Math Papers
- Minute Math
- Mini-lessons

Introduction/Grabber:
Estimating is not guessing. What does it mean to estimate? Today we are
going estimate the sum of two numbers rounded together. First, lets get
started with our Minute Math.
Procedures:

Set students up on compass odyssey.

minute math 12
adding tens and ones (base 10 blocks)
estimating sums (rounding to the nearest tenth)
(if extra time: teach new game, Tens Go Fish)
*one minute warning: switch groups
minute math 9
totals and missing parts
Whats in the bag? (writing addition sentence)
(if extra time: Whats missing? 100 chart)

Homework:
Daily math homework will be handed out at the end of the day; Happy
Thanksgiving!!:)
Closure:
Discuss how the students can use their knowledge of base 10 to help solve
double digit addition sentences.
Discuss how students can use manipulative to help solve missing parts in
addition sentences.
