Sport Pedagogy Lesson Plan Template (Elementary and Middle School)
Background Information
Teacher: Sheldon Simas

Date: October 28, 2015

School: Cleveland Elementary

Grade Level: 3rd Grade

Lesson Focus: This week both lessons will primarily

focus on the under-hand serve for badminton.

# Of students: 20 Students

Equipment and Facilities: For this lesson its crucial

to utilize a large amount of space. The grass space is
good enough and/or black top space. Equipments
used for the lesson will be approximately 20
badminton racquets and minimum of 10 birdies.
20 cones
Utilize four of the twenty for the instant activity.

Safety Considerations: The safety considerations falls

under the consideration for space. Students will be
spaced out quite tremendously so that it will give
them enough space to perform the cues of the skill.
This will prevent from student colliding within each
others space and possibly get seriously injured.

Lesson Specifics
Behavioral Contingencies: When students are talking
I will simply raise my hand to receive the students
attentions. The students will only receive one
warning, if and only if any student shows any
disrespect to the teachers and fellow classmates,
without hesitation they will be asked to sit out.
Determining the consequence for such behavior will
depend on how crucial the situation is.

Previously Learned Skills: This week will essentially

be the introductory week for this specific lesson
focus. Any previous learned skills that could be
applied would be proper body positioning. The body
positioning for the under-hand toss is fairly similar so
students shouldn't hesitate on the body positioning.

Teaching Strategy: The main strategies used are

Whole-Part-Whole and Active Learning.
(III)

Academic Language: Students will be introduced to

the understanding of the phrase, cues of the skill.
From there the students will be able to perform
different sets of skills just based of the COTS. The
main goal is for the students to identify all the
different components that go into a skill. (I, II, IV)

Prior to this lesson the students would of already been

able to perform the under-hand serve for badminton.
The students are however, having difficulties to
successfully perform the actual skill.

Student
Objectives:

Psychomotor (P): The students will be assigned with a partner. By applying the cues of
the skill the students will practice by applying the COTS for the partner pass activity.
Cognitive (C): Before we begin the activity the students will go through a quick check for
understanding. After the cues of the skill have been provided and demonstrated to the
students, they will be asked to repeat what the cues of the skill were.
H-R Fitness (H): The beginning the lesson will consist of the four corners game once
again. This is a great way to get the kids moving so this will act as a natural dynamic
routine.

CALIFORNIA PHYSICAL EDUCATION MODEL CONTENT STANDARDS:

I. Demonstrate the motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities.
II.Demonstrate knowledge of movement concepts, principles and strategies that apply to the learning and
performance of physical activities.
III.Assess and maintain a level of physical fitness to improve health and performance.
IV.Demonstrate and utilize knowledge of psychological and sociological concepts, principles and strategies
that apply to the learning and performance of physical activity.

NASPE PHYSICAL EDUCATION CONTENT STANDARDS a physically literate person:

1. Demonstrates competency in motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical
activities.
2. Applies knowledge of concepts, principles, strategies and tactics related to movement and performance.
3. Demonstrates the knowledge skills to achieve and maintain a health-enhancing level of physical activity and

Instant Activity: The instant activity for
minutes this lesson will involve the game four
corners however it will include dynamic
movements. The teacher will simply
count down from 20 out loud. While the
teacher is counting down the students will
either be running or hopping from cone to
cone. Once the count down has come to
an end the students will stop at whatever
cone they happen to be at. The teacher
will randomly call out a cone(s) and
provide the movements and reps.
Whoever is at the cone that the teacher
happens to call they have to perform the
movements. Then repeat.

with physical activity prior to
the lesson content. Allow the
students to move around and
have fun doing it by utilizing
certain games to their liking.

Transition:
minutes After the instant activity the students will
be given a short water break before the
beginning of the lesson content. They
will meet back where the teacher is for
further instruction.

3-5
Set Induction:
minutes The teacher will start off the lesson by
review. With this the teacher can
determine whether or no the students
remembered the previous lesson content.
The teacher will do a quick check for
understanding with the students on the
previous content. Shortly after that the
teacher will then explain to the students
what the main lesson focus of the week is.
Purpose:
Explain to the students the reasoning as to
why we learn step by step is all because
they will be assessed towards the end of
the content.

NASPE 1,2, &3

Start/Stop Signals:
The main technique
used will be the
raising of the hand.
The teacher will
simply raise their
hand saying raise
your hand if you can
hear me. Basically
repeat that until all
student cooperate. If
all else fails then the
teacher will have to
raise their voice to
promote authority
over the students.
Grouping Strategies:
The teacher will hand
pick who the partners
will be. If students
complain they will be
sent out. The teacher
will provide the
warning before
assigning partners

classmate. The numbers in which they were

assigned for instant activity will indicate who
the students are assigned with. The teacher
will briefly explain the lesson focus and the
COTS pertaining for the content. Students
will then begin by applying the COTS for the
under-hand serve with their partner and then
do that a series of times. We are repeating
this phase mainly because the students aren't
necessarily performing the skill correctly.

Teaching Cues for Task 1:

COTS (Under-Hand Serve)
Non-dominant foot forward
perpendicular to target
elbow close to body
Pinch birdie
Flick wrist
Follow through

Common Errors Task 1:

1. Proper body position for
performing the skill.
2. Arm positioning
3. Elbow not close enough to
body.
4. Lacks the flick

Demonstration Plan:
The teacher will demonstrate for the
students how to properly under-hand
serve. Badminton isn't something anyone
can obtain easily, so the students will need
a series of practice and demonstrations.
Questions to Check Understanding
Do I release the birdie before impact with
the racquet?

between lessons. After their break they
will then be debriefed on the next activity.

When the instruction is given, the students
and their partner will transition into an
accuracy routine. The teacher will work
with groups individually and then provide
the ok to transition into the accuracy
routine. Here the students will increase
the distance between themselves and their
partners. The students have the
opportunity to choose the distance
however, the teacher will strongly
encourage for the students to challenge
themselves.
After the students have been practicing
the and applying the cues of the skill for
the accuracy routine, the teacher will then
ask the partners to all line up in pairs of
two facing the teacher. The teacher will
stand at the other end of the field and ask
the students to run to the teacher and
back. With this the students will have to
not only run to the teacher and back but
also while keeping the birdie in the air
with he racquet.
Demonstration Plan:
The teacher will quickly review the COTS
for the Under-Hand serve. While the
teacher reviews the COTS they will utilize
the student/teacher demonstration
approach.
Questions to Check Understanding
If there are any students who are not
focussed while the teacher is providing
them with instruction, then the teacher
will simply call on that specific student to !6
