Systematic Observation Report

10/05/15

Overview
Teacher: Brydie
Week #2 at Cleveland Elementary (2nd grade)

15 - 20 students
Equipment& facilities: blacktop, hula hoops, softballs

The focus of the lesson was to catch objects.

Systematic Observation 1
The first systematic observation I completed was the time analysis. The total
number of intervals consisted of 59 A intervals, 10 I intervals, and 35 M intervals.
Although the students for the most part were active a lot of time was also spent
towards managing them to stay on task. The students were supposed to toss their
object in their hula hoops but many of them would intentionally throw their object
too far so Brydie had to keep reminding them to stay in their hula hoops. One
strategy to improve the lesson I think might be to first move the hula hoops further
away from each other. By spreading the hula hoops out the students might be less
distracted by their classmates. Another strategy to improve the lesson is to
designate an area to put their backpacks away from when Brydie has them sit for
instructions. A lot of time was spent in the beginning of the lesson for management
because the students were too focused on the pile of backpacks.
Systematic Observation 2
The second systematic observation I completed for the week was the teacher
movement. In the instant activity of the game statues, Brydie followed the class
back and forth keeping an eye on them throughout the game so she was always
close enough to give them instructions and positive cheers. During the main portion
of the lesson Brydie would weave around all the students giving lots of individual
feedback. She would spend more time around some students if they were not on
task or needed help with correctly performing the activity. A strategy to improve the
lesson might be to have cones marking off how far the students are allowed to go
pass. Otherwise they sometimes become too separated from the rest of the class.
Another strategy could be to incorporate a reward after the activity. Many of the
students would cheat and count higher than the amount of times they actually
throw the object so it could become a friendly class competition. .
