Systematic Observation Report

11/4/15

Overview
Teacher: Brydie
Week #2 at Cleveland Elementary (2nd grade)

15 - 20 students
Equipment& facilities: soccer balls, cones/polyspots, grass

The focus of the lesson was to practice kicking and trapping a soccer ball.
Systematic Observation 1
The first systematic observation I completed was the time analysis. The total
number of intervals consisted of 54 A intervals, 11 I intervals, and 31 M intervals. In
this lesson it was the first time we had class on the grass and I think thats why
more management was needed for the class to settle down at the beginning and
throughout the lesson. The students had a lot of space to run around instead of
staying in a group for instructions. The day was also really windy so some of the
students might have not wanted to sit still for instructions. A strategy to improve
this lesson could be to have cones to mark the area where the students are
expected to stay in. This is also applicable to the rest of the lesson when they
kicked the soccer ball to their partners the students were scattered all over the field
so it was hard to make sure everyone was on task. Another strategy is to pair the
students instead of letting them choose their partners. This might ensure that the
students are more on task.
Systematic Observation 2
The second systematic observation I completed for the week was teach/student
demonstrations. During the instant activity for relay racing there were no cues used
since the students knew how to run and skip. For soccer kicking Brydie
demonstrated the skill and recited the cues to the class. She probably did not ask
for a student demonstration because the students seemed too eager to get started.
They were able to see and hear her give instructions. A strategy to improve this
lesson could be to include a corrective demo of kicking the soccer ball. She often
had to remind the students to use the inside of their foot when they were practicing
kicking to their partner. Another strategy could be to have the students repeat the
cues back to her so theyre more familiar with it before getting started.
