Systematic Observation Report

11/9/15

Overview
Teacher: Brydie
Week #2 at Cleveland Elementary (2nd grade)

15 - 20 students
Equipment& facilities: scarves, indoors

The focus of the lesson was initially supposed to be on the accuracy of kicking a
soccer ball, however because it was raining the class got moved in the cafeteria.
Instead the class played and juggled with scarves.
Systematic Observation 1
The first systematic completed was the SOFIT. The total MVPA was 880 seconds. I
randomly chose 3 students to record data on for 8-10 each. In the first instant
activity most of the students were sitting down in a circle because they were
playing duck duck goose. They got to play 3 rounds before moving to the rest of the
activity of the lesson which was to practice juggling with scarves. Many of the
students were excited about the scarves but not all of them really tried to juggle the
scarves. Some students just stood still waving them around or other students would
chase each other around with them. A strategy to improve the lesson could be for
Brydie to have them work in partners so theyre more organized instead of
cluttering around random areas. Another strategy could be to divide the class in half
and have a competition at the end so theyre more likely to practice perfecting their
scarf juggling during the lesson.
Systematic Observation 2
The second systematic observation I completed was idiosyncrasies. The most used
idiosyncrasies were ok and stop and hey/ay. I think that Brydies
idiosyncrasies during this lesson were nothing over the top. Although I do think
hey/ay is something she should avoid when addressing the class because it does
not sound professional. A strategy to improve could be to just address the students
by their names if someone is off task. I think that would also help with saying stop
because once she calls on someone by their name they usually stop what theyre
doing. Another strategy she could use is addressing tiger pride as a whole instead of
trying to single small groups out by saying hey. So for example tiger pride we do
not run around with the scarf instead of addressing the issue multiple times to
smaller groups.
