The Last Choice that the Patients Can Make

Euthanasia has been an ongoing argument for many years in the world. The
definition offered by the Oxford English Dictionary incorporates suffering as a necessary
condition, with "the painless killing of a patient suffering from an incurable and painful
disease or in an irreversible coma". There are endless controversies between
proponents and opponents whether should euthanasia be implemented in the society or
not. People in some countries strongly disagree with the euthanasia for many reasons
such as moral, ethical, religious and legal issues. The opponents assert that euthanasia
is no different than a murder while supporters claim that it eases patients severe pain
and emphasizes alleviating suffering, preserving bodily integrity, self-determination,
and personal autonomy. (John Griffiths, Alex Bood, Heleen Weyers 186). Euthanasia is
legal in many countries such as Netherlands, Colombia, Switzerland and Belgium. There
are many meaningless life extensions which also followed by several negative effects
including physical pain and financial burdens so euthanasia should be enforced in all
countries
To start with, euthanasia should be legalized for the sake of the human right.
Supporters said it should be implemented because all people have rights to know when
or how to die and minimize their pain with the doctors. Also, in contrast with the
religious world, euthanasia is not a murder. When people decide to do euthanasia, it
must be the most dignified and important decision that human can make in ones life
because he is the only one who has the strongest attachment to his life. The Universal
Declaration of Human Right states that Every individual has these rights; life, liberty,
and security of person. Therefore, dying peacefully can be a last choice for patients
who dont want to endure awful pain anymore. Why cant this choice be respected?
Patients dignities and their decisions should be regarded as a top priority since others
cannot experience or understand how long they have been suffering their pain and how
painful they are. Everyone knows that they are going to die someday but the most
important thing that people want to know is when, how, and under what situations.
Although it is true that euthanasia is an action which ends humans life intentionally,
people should have rights to choose circumstances surrounding their death as they can
choose the conditions that they live.
Secondly, euthanasia reduces huge financial burdens .These days, development of
the medical technology helps people live much longer than the past. Unfortunately, it
indicates that increasing number of people are suffering illnesses much longer, and
their family are suffering financial difficulties as well. According to the Lees study, the
survey shows that 64% of doctors from BMC Medical Ethics have intention to support
assisting euthanasia for a patient who has an incurable and painful disease, while 36%
of doctors disagree. Unable to express or experience, staying in a vegetative state and
impossible to breathe without medical machine is not living. Plus, suffering painful
operation all day is not a real life as well, in case of the hopefulness situation. If patients
have possibilities for the recovery, they must undergo medical treatments with no
reasons. However, in reality, miracles do not happen that easily. Most of patients family
spend thousands of dollars for medical treatments because they lean on a false hope
since they are unable to give up their lovers. Many people decide that a heartbeat is a
viable form of living in our society. But just prolonging the length of patients life who is

lying in bed and staying in a vegetative state is literally meaningless. There are many
people who are suffering bankruptcy due to the expensive hospital fee. Paying a lot of
money for the patients who are unconscious and cannot express by themselves is not a
worthwhile action at all. This is no different than donating their money to the hospital.
The opponents of the euthanasia might claim that implementation of euthanasia
can be abused in the society. However, there is no reasons to worry about it. It will only
be applied to people who have no options available or who really wanted to do. Thats
because not only the government would definitely make strict and specific laws to
prevent the misuse of euthanasia but also to protect the patients right and their
opinions. Thus, euthanasia will never be enforced to do without the patients strong
agreement.
To conclude, there are numerous good reasons to allow for the euthanasia.
Enforcement of euthanasia will relieve the pressure from patient and unburdening the
family from the financial and emotional problem. It could help both patient and family to
prepare the farewell as well. Euthanasia is not an excuse or a tool for murder but a last
choice that patients can make who have no options anymore. In fact, many patients
want to end their life before their diseases take away their lives, because no one wants
to have their life ended by situations one cannot control. For these reasons, euthanasia
should be legalized in the world as soon as possible.
