Francis Marion University Lesson Plan Template

Cierra Weatherford
DAY: 10/5/2015
SUBJECT: Math
TIME: 12:30 to 1:45
TOPIC: Even and Odd Numbers
UNIT TITLE: Algebraic thinking and
operations

STANDARD(S)/OBJECTIVE(S)/ASSESSMENT(S):
STANDARD(S): 2.ATO.3 Determine whether a number through 20 is odd or even
using pairings of objects, counting by twos, or finding two equal addends to
represent the number (e.g., 3 + 3 =
6)
OBJECTIVE(S): The students will be able to tell whether a number is even or odd
with numbers 1-20.
ASSESSMENT DETAILS: Students will be given a number 1-20. With their
partners they will determine if the number is even or odd. If the number is odd they
will throw a bean bag overhand, if the number is even they will throw the bean bag
underhand that many times.
CRITERIA FOR MASTERY OF ASSESSMENT(S): Each student will get three
numbers and will be expected to get at least two out of the three correct.
KEY VOCABULARY/CONCEPTS: Even number- Any number that is a multiple of
two
Odd number- Any number that isn't a multiple of two

MATERIALS:
TEACHER MATERIALS NEEDED: Bean bags or soft ball
STUDENT MATERIALS NEEDED: pencil/pen

STEP BY STEP PROCEDURES:

INTRODUCTION: The lesson begins with an overview of what the difference is
between even and odd numbers. Every number between 1 and 20 will be discussed
and proven to be even or odd. The assessment details will also be covered and the
rules of the game will be discussed.
LESSON DEVELOPMENT: The teacher will give several examples of how to tell
whether a number is even or odd. Then the teacher will also show how the game
will be played so that the students will understand how to play. The purpose of this
activity is to prepare students for future lessons that will consist of them knowing
the difference between even and odd numbers. This lesson is relevant to students
because it is a source of physical activity and exercise which is needed in a students
everyday life.
ASSESSMENT/CLOSURE: Students will pick a partner/ get into groups of two. The
only material they will need is a bean bag or soft ball. The teacher will call our a
number or math problem. The students will the determine whether the number is
even or odd. If. the number that is called out is odd the students will pass the bean
bag overhanded that amount of times. If the number is even the students will pass
the bean bag underhanded. This activity will get them not only thinking of even and
odd numbers but also practice math addition and subtraction problems to

determine the answer as they play. The game will also include physical activity
which is important to include into daily lessons that can also be a fun way to learn.
After the students play the game for at least 10 minutes and get most correct the
teacher will give an overview or assessment on even and odd numbers.

SPECIAL ACCOMODATIONS:
RATES OF LEARNING:
Tasks for early finishers: Students will begin to work on numbers 2030
Provisions for those who struggle or need more time: Students will be
given extra time to work on numbers 1-20
ABILITY LEVELS:
Tasks for advanced learners: Advanced learners will be asked to explain
why a number is even or odd
Tasks for struggling learners: Struggling learners will just have to
identify whether a number is even or odd
LEARNING STYLES:
VISUAL: The lesson will be shown using the bean bags
AUDITORY: The instructions will be spoken out loud
KINESTHETIC/TACTILE: The students will have hands on time by throwing
the bean bags
SPECIAL NEEDS: No student had an IEP or 504 plan
