Writers voice refers to writing aspects that reflect on the personality of the author. The voice of
the writer is what makes each piece distinctively their own, no matter the genre.

Genre is the guidelines and generic content that governs each literary style. We write in different
genres because no writing style is an exact mirror of the other. Each literary situation calls for
different content, purpose and reaches a specific audience in some way. Thus genre is needed to
differentiate between these literary situations so that the purpose of the writing is being fulfilled.

In school I am required to write under an academic genre which is broad and branches out and
differentiates based on courses and majors. Journal entries, lab reports, research papers and
reading responses are some examples of genres that I use for school purposes. I aspire to become
a doctor which would require me to write in genres that is specific to that career. Genres such as
prescription writing and medical reports are required for that profession. Genres are also used
outside of academic and professional settings. Writing a text message or email and grocery lists
are also genres as the have a unique format and purpose that they are known for.

For my biology major I am required to us APA citations in my papers.

A rhetorical situation is the setting that surrounds the paper you are writing. It involves the
intended audience, the medium you use to reach them in an effective manner and the substance
of the writing that is to be conveyed to the audience.

The genre that I mostly write in is text messages. The purpose is to send a concise message to
communicate with someone. What is communicated and the length of the text depends on the
audience. For example when texting friends I would fully utilize acronyms such as lol, lmao,
wyd, etc. but I would not be able to use such acronyms while texting my mother because she
does not understand what they mean. To effectively communicate with her through text messages
I would have to spell my words out fully and use complete sentences with proper punctuation as
well as sending multiple texts to complete a coherent thought.

Evidence for papers can be found while doing research or experimentation. I usually use books
and the internet to find the evidence I need to support whatever topic I may be writing at the
time.

I do use prewriting techniques, more specifically outlines that help me get down the layout of
how I want my paper to go and gives me a clear path to get there.

For this class I expect to advance my writing skills with techniques discussed with you and my
classmates. An interactive setting would be the best learning environment for this course.
Therefore I expect that we all would be made to feel comfortable expressing our opinions and
thoughts.

The rhetorical situation for both paragraphs differ. The paragraph geared towards the teacher
requires an academic writing genre with complete sentences, correct grammar and punctuation.
The text message on the other hand lacks those components because it is required for a friend,
which is an informal setting. Thus acronyms and shortening of words is done which is normal for
most text messages.
