Clay Coil Building/Slab Building Birdhouses

Students will create and innovate their own original


birdhouse designs.

Students will choose what kind of bird they would like to build a
birdhouse for.
Students will use a variety of clay tools to create their birdhouses.
Vocabulary:
Scoring: Making marks on the edges to two pieces of clay before
joining them with slip.
Slip: Clay diluted with water to the consistency of cream, used for
joining pieces of clay.
Slab Method: A method of making pottery in which a thick, flat
plate, or slice, of clay is cut into shapes which are joined to form an
object. The joined edges are scored and slip is used.

Coiling: A method of creating pots by building bottom and walls


with even, ropelike coils.
Product and Psychomotor Skills: Students will use all three Psychomotor skills. They will use their Cognitive skills in
responding and valuing their artwork at the end. Also, the students will have added their own characterization in their
projects. The Psychomotor skills will come from the actual movements needed to work with clay.

Description of Activities and Setting


We will review different tools and clay techniques. We will pick a building
that has personal significance, research it, and turn it into a birdhouse.
I expect students to have brainstormed at least three buildings and have
sketched out at least three possible outcomes for each building. I then expect
the students to build their birdhouses using the coil or slab technique. Students
should think about additive and subtractive methods as well when creating
this project.
I will demonstrate building techniques using a document cam, if the class is
large, so everyone can see. It will be tough to have a big class gather around a
table to watch. I will demonstrate both building techniques. Also I will help
students brainstorm if they are struggling.
If a student requests assistance, I will demonstrate on my own example so
they can follow along.
Students are to research on computers of different houses, buildings, or
structures. Pictures must be included for whatever they decide. If it is a house
that they create they must have sketched out a plan. Students must brainstorm
a minimum of three buildings and have three possible outcomes per building.
I chose computers because most classrooms now days have at least one
computer in it, while they may not have nicer technology like IPads.
Students will clean up ten minutes before class ends. Each student will
thoroughly clean his or her station and supplies.

For closure, we will have a verbal review. I will ask questions out loud and
listen to students answers.
