Looking Forward Recommendations and Suggestions

Talk the Global Nutrition Lingo

Anemia low red blood cell counts or hemoglobin in blood. Specific problem for
women and adolescents, especially pregnant women.
Fortification Process of adding micronutrients to food (ex. iodized salt).
GAM (Global Acute Malnutrition) measurement of the nutritional status of a
population, usually in emergency situations such as with refugees.
NACS Nutrition Assessment, Counseling, and Support.
RUTF (ready-to-use therapeutic foods) foods designed for specific purposes
such as dietary supplementation.
Stunting - Moderate or severe deviations from median weight for height of
reference population

Why is it important?
Who doesnt like food? But it is deeper than that First some stats:

One out of nine people in the world are undernourished (2014 -2016
projection) that means roughly 795 million people

2 billion people over 30% of the worlds population are anemic (mostly
due to iron deficiency)

In developing countries, every second pregnant woman and about 40% of

preschool children are estimated to be anemic.

Nearly half (45%) of deaths in children under five is caused by poor nutrition.

Where in the world?

Types of Nutritional Activities

Nutrition exists in a number of different forms in projects. Programs can be
completely centered around nutrition or contain nutritional activities as one of
the cross sectional components.
Examples of activities that fall under nutrition include:
> NACS training and support
> Supplementation and RUTF
> Agriculture
> Food security and emergencies
> Research and Policy
> Private Sector Partnerships

USAIDs Nutritional Strategy: 2014 - 2025

Main goal: Improve nutrition to save lives, build resilience, increase economic
productivity and advance development.

Decrease chronic malnutrition, measured by stunting, by 20% through USAIDs various

programming

Reduce number of stunted children by a minimum of 2 million through the Feed the
Future Program.

In response to humanitarian crisis, USAID would like to maintain a GAM below the
emergency threshold of 15%.
