Are you sure we are at that point of the year again? Wow, where does the time go? Perhaps you are like me and have had similar thoughts. Well, winter has arrived and there is no doubt that we are only weeks away from this important time of celebration May | offer you some thoughts for your consideration? Christmas is one of the most important times of the year because it marks the birth of the Christ child, Jesus...given to us by the Father in heaven as the greatest gift of all ime. Jesus... sent as the Saviour for all people to save each human from his and her sin, Jesus...came as the Only One, who can give us fullness of life on this earth and eternal life beyond this one, Merry Christmas is an expression that reminds us to be merry, to be joyful, for the gift of Jesus Christ. During this time of the year it is a tradition to give gifts to family and friends. Let me suggest that you put Jesus on your gift giving list this year. What can | give Him, you ask? You can give Him your heart. When you do you will have the greatest Christmas ever. My prayers that you will have a very Merry Christmas. They bled, and they bruised, and their superpowers were as simple as listening, or loving. Heroes were ordinary people who knew that even if their own lives were impossibly knotted, they could untangle someone else's. And maybe that — Jodi Picoult, Second Glance Springside in Bloom Receives It’s First Evaluation -Michelle Weston The long awaited results from the first year of the ommuunities Communities in Bloom Program have finally shown up and we are excited to share the results with Springside and district residents! Results —- Communities in Bloom (Springside) - 2015 * Novice Category * Bloom Rating = 2 Blooms * Evaluation is based on 6 criteria divided into the 6 sections; assessed out of 3 categories (A, B&O) Categories Evaluated [AUS | MX [renee 995 [1800 B. [landscape 370 [2000 [Fort Dep a0 [1750 Total | 295.5 [525.0 Categories Not Evaluated Environmental Action | 0.00 | 150.0 Heritage Conservation | 0.00 | 150.0 Urban Forestry (0.00 | 175.0 2% Percentage = 56% JUDGES’ OBSERVATIONS * Community tidiness is Springside’s strongest point. Its appearance leaves visitors with a very positive impression of a community that takes pride in itself. * The Cemetery was well kept and tidy. * The Lions’ Park has good signage. It was well mowed and tidy. * Ditches, service roads, and boulevards were well-trimmed. The park and the area next to the rail lines were well cut. ‘* Most residential yards and hedges were well cared for. ‘+ Itwas nice to see the community engaged in the recycling initiative (blue bins) ‘* Businesses, like the Credit Union and Mary's, were tidy. ‘© Churches and Seniors’ home grounds were well maintained. ‘+ We noticed good uptake on the public’s use of the new garbage cans. ‘©The free landfill day in conjunction with the annual clean-up day is a great innovation! JUDGES’ RECOMMENDATIONS ‘* Isthere a possibility of having service clubs, groups, and the school involved in a tidiness project? For example, you could have the school students responsible for certain areas on your clean-up day. + The Committee should strongly support the Town’s plan to have the park tables painted. Could they be painted in bright neon colors — each table a different color or all tables painted similarly in a number of different colors? Seek volunteers, maybe students, to do the painting. ‘* Consider looking for citizens other than Committee members to become responsible for certain areas in the Town. For example, one family could be responsible to weed and water one flower bed. In conjunction with that, remember the idea of putting up a sign in each of these areas to identify who is looking after it. ‘+ Recognize good effort, both business and residential, .e. thank you notes in your newsletter, posters, etc.) ‘+ Advertise by inserts in your Town's utility statements. Include thank you notes, ads for upcoming events and invitations to the residents to sign up for small volunteer jobs. NOTE: These are just a few of the observations and recommendations in the Evaluation that provides Springside residents with a good picture of all the hard work done this first year with thoughts on future plans. Thanks to everyone in the community who showed interest and did their best to make Springside the beautiful town it is! Supper would consist of fried pickerel (we were not allowed to eat meat on Christmas Eve), perogies with mushroom sauce, meatless cabbage rolls, nachinka (cornmeal) and Kutia (wheat). My sister Emelie would make one of my all-time favorite Christmas treats, ‘a Ukrainian poppy seed or prune filled Ukrainian doughnut called pampushky. After supper, the men would retire to the basement to play cards while the women cleaned up after the meal and had a visit. Just around midnight, my brother Norman would line the kitchen window sill with twelve hollowed out sections of onions, each onion representing a month of the year, beginning at the far left for January. He would pour some salt into each section and leave them on the window sill for several hours. Upon checking some “months” would have the salt dissolved completely, leaving liquid, which would predict a rainy, wet month, some would be damp and others completely dry. This would be notated on a calendar and checked during the next year to see how accurate the predictions were. He would always point out during the course of the year when his onion predictions would come true! Pampushky (Ukrainian Prune Filled Doughnuts) 3 pkgs. Stir well, Place 8 cups of flour in a large bowl, making a well in the center. Slowly add the yeast mixture to the flour. if your dough Is still very sticky and runny, start adding the remaining flour by 1/2 cup increments until dough is soft and not too sticky. Turn dough out on a floured surface. Knead dough for 10, minutes. Place dough into a well-greased bowl. Cover with a towel and place in a warm place to allow dough to double in size (approximately 1 hour). Punch the dough down, cover and let it rise again until it has doubled in size, again about 1 hour. While your dough is rising, you can make your filling. For Prune Filling Place prunes in a medium saucepan and cover with enough water to just cover the prunes. Bring water to a boil and simmer until prunes are soft, about 10 minutes. Drain prunes, ensuring all water has been removed. Let the colander sit in the sink for about 10 minutes to ensure all the moisture has drained out. Cut any larger chunks of prunes into smaller pieces. In a medium bowl, combine prunes with sugar and lemon juice. Mix well and set aside. To Assemble Pampushky Roll out dough to 1/4 inch in thickness. Cut out dough using a round cookie cutter, about a 2 or 3 inches in diameter. Place 1/2 teaspoon of filling in the center of the dough.
