My Experience in EN 101
Everybody learns something in each day of their lives. Similarly, I learned from writing letters to
word and words to sentences from the beginning of my life. English is an international language,
so everybody is expected to learn it even though you do not belong to the English speaking
country. Writing English was hard for me because I am not from an English speaking country. As
I have moved from my home country to the USA, which is an English speaking country, I must
learn how to read and write in English. Therefore, I took English 101 class. English 101 is a
primary course which needs to be taken by everyone before starting any credit level classes.
During this semester I have had many difficult phases whiling writing papers.
During the entire semester, I wrote, the cover letter and the CV. In writing CV I did well as I had
already learnt it in high school back home. However, I did not do well in cover letter because I
had not written and seen it in my life ever before. Therefore, I had to rewrite it in which I
eventually got a good grade. Secondly, we had to do the literary analysis paper. In this paper we
had to compare between two topics written by different authors. In this paper, I did really good
as I had understood the theme of the paper.
Thirdly, I was assigned by a research paper, called Smithsonian Assignment. In this assignment I
had to visit the Smithsonian Museum and write about two museum. This was my first research
paper ever. I had no idea what to do and what not to do. Thats why I wrote whatever was on my
head, in my paper. I visited museum but I didnt know what to analyze there. Also, I had to write

the paper in MLA citation. I had heard the word Citation for the first time, so I did not know
what to do. I checked online to learn about it, but I did not understand. Thus, I included URLs as
a reference in my paper instead of works cited. The second paper, therefore was the most
difficult paper for me. After that we had to do an argument paper. It is kind of debate, but in
written form. Also, we had to include the opposite side of an argument in this paper. Like
Smithsonian assignment, MLA citation needed to be included in the paper. It was not that
difficult for me because I had already little idea about the citations from the second paper.
Finally, we did a final research paper with the topics that we liked. There was many requirements
on this paper. We had to write annotated bibliography, abstract and the paper. Even though, there
were many things to do in this paper, it was not difficult for me at all. It is because, I had good
knowledge about how to do in text citation, and how to organize the paper into different
paragraphs nicely. From the last paper, I learned how to write an annotated bibliography and
abstract, along with the paper. Though, I thought it would be tough to complete, it did not take
me enough time to do.
In every class of English 101, I learned new things. In this entire semester, I think I did good job
in the literary analysis paper because I got the highest point in this paper. Secondly, I would say I
did well in the last paper with the annotated bibliography and the abstract. This is because it was
the last paper, so I had learned almost everything that was need to be included in a research
paper. I also learned how to paraphrase, summarize, and quote the research that has been done by
others after writing different kinds of research papers in EN 101 course. I guess, I still need to
improve in word transition. Because I do not belong to an English speaking country, my
sentences jumps from past to present and present to past tenses. I must improve it in order to be a
perfect writer.

English 101 has prepared me to take the further course, that is EN 102. It taught me a lot of
techniques and ideas to develop an essay. Before, I was scared to write long pages essays, but
now I can easily write them without any difficulties. I have heard that EN 102 was a difficult
course, but I finally made it as my professor made us understand about each of the assignment
before assigning them. Similarly, I hope that I can pass EN 102 with a good grade. With the
knowledge that I have gained from the English 101 course, I can do good in English 102. Also, I
will be able to write nicely in my other courses in future. English 101 developed me as a good
writer.
