Lesson # Uses of Plants in a


series of Plants lessons

Brief Lesson Description:


The lesson is generally about plants. At the beginning it will be a revision activity as an engagement on the
parts of the plants. The revision will help teacher to extend their knowledge with new knowledge, which
will be the new lesson. The building knowledge will be the uses of plants, so kids will recognize some
useful things we get from plants, according to which part of the plant, for example; we eat lettuce which is
the leaves, etc. The kids will practice identifying these real objects and printed papers to classify them to
the plants parts.
Performance Expectation(s):
1-LS1-1
Use materials to design a solution to a human problem, human get materials for their living from plants.
Students firstly will classify various objects (real and print pictures), if they took from plants or not. Then
will classify them again according to the plants parts.
Specific Learning Outcomes:
At the end of the lesson,
Recognize how plants useful for people to live?
Classify materials and object if its come from plants or not?
Identify materials and objects come from which part of the plant?

Prior Student Knowledge:
Students already distinguish the parts of the plants.
They know most of the material examples that the teacher will use for classifying, like fruits, chairetc.

Possible Preconceptions/Misconceptions:

Most of the students thought that they can pick vegetables and fruits from the upper part of the tree.
Students usually come to their mind that we use plants for food, they forget that there are other
objects, like furniture from wood or even medicine from different type of plant parts.

ENGAGE: ( 12 min ) On the Floor
Opening Activity Access Prior Learning / Stimulate Interest / Generate Questions:
1- Pre lesson video:
Before the lesson time, a video song will be played for breaking the kids brain and to activate them
specially it is the last lesson of the day. Kids will imitate the moves of the dancing in the video.

2- Greeting & Reminding Rules
It is important to do it as routine, to save the lesson time, and kids learn by routine.
3- Quick Discussion:
Quick discussion with whole class to review plants parts, ex:
Q: Do you remember what our last science lesson! It was about what?
A: (About plants, growing plants, part of plants)
Q: Did you grow your own plant? Show me yours, do you see any part you know?
A: (stem, leaves, flower, roots)
Q: Who remember all parts of plants? Well, we are going to do a poster, and show me if you
remember.
4- Poster Activity:
Material needed: Poster, real leaves, 4 green stew, wool yarns, 3 cupcake paper, seeds, glue. The
poster is A5 size, already painted a background of soil sky with smiley sun.
Students will sit on the carpet in a big circle and I will be sitting with them, the poster will be on the
board, the materials of plant parts in the baskets individually. The kids will pass a box contain their
name in piece of paper while singing (What in the box?), when they finish song the kid will choose
one name to help him to paste one part of the plant on the poster.

Teacher will ask some questions to lead them to the core of the new lesson.

2- Activity, Classifying (from plants, not from plants): (On their groups)
Kids will return to their groups; they will find 3 white small boards on each group. The board in the left
will be labeled to (From plants), the middle board have a tree with parts name, the right bored labeled
to (Not from plants). They also will find a box contain different real and printed uses materials, already
stacked with magnetic. The kids will classify them easily, and the first group will finish will have gifts.
EXPLAIN: ( 5 min )
Concepts Explained and Vocabulary Defined:
1- Presentation PPT: (On the Floor)
The PowerPoint will just review what they did, then introduce the uses of the plants then mention the
parts for each example.
2- Vocabulary:
- Plant = Tree
- Fiber
- Medicine

- Classify
- Order
- Find your pair

ELABORATE: ( 10 min )
Applications and Extensions:
(On the Floor)
1- Activity Flash Cards, Find pairs:
(2 types of cards, part of plant & something used from plant)
Students will be sitting on the carpet again in a circle. Each student will take one flash card from a
box and pass it to the next kids. After they finish, the teacher will choose one to begin, he/she will
show his friends his card. One kid has to know that he is the one who should be the matching pair.
For example, one card is perfume, the other card should be flower as the plant part.
Last step, these pairs will put these cards sticks on a Display Board.
They all should have the chance to find their pairs, to display their sticks cards on the board.
EVALUATE: ( 3 min )
1- Formative Monitoring (Questioning / Discussion):
Discuss with kids what the learn?
2- Summative Assessment (Quiz / Project / Report):
Give them a worksheet
(If there is time, they will do it in the class, if not will do it at home as homework)
They have to draw/paste photo of one part of the plant in the left box
Then draw/paste an example use we get from this part of plant
