December 5th, 2015 Sandia National Laboratories, New Mexico P.O. Box 5800 Albuquerque, NM 87185-(mail stop)* Dear committee of Student Programs, I would like the opportunity to apply for the undergraduate internship involving nuclear science posted on indeed.com . I am currently a second semester sophomore at the University of New Mexico majoring in nuclear engineering and I am wanting to expand my experience and knowledge within the subject. I have had two superb semesters since I stumbled in my first as I currently have a 3.4 GPA and have finished with a 3.8 and a 3.5 in my previous two semesters. I have taken core classes such as general chemistry 1 and 2, computer science 151, calculus 1, technical writing 219 and several other course. My grades are a reflection of my ability to bounce back from a bad situation, determination, hard work and dedication to being the best student possible in any situation and task at hand. I have been an intern at Sandia National Laboratories since I was a junior in high school. As an intern for the past three years I have had many projects ranging from programming to database management. I am responsible for updating and maintaining servers and the databases on them, creating web bases applications that can utilize these servers, gather data, input and organize data in databases, and install new hardware and applications throughout my office building. I have shadowed my mentor Don Shirah on many projects involving advanced programming and continue to do so now. It has been quite an experience as I have been able to apply some of the methods I observed to my own applications and web designing. The skills I have obtained via my mentor and others I have worked with throughout my internship have allowed me to become proficient with my project outlines and objective planning, have a broader range of programming skills and knowledge, and a basic understanding of how a scientific and engineering environment works. I have gained greater knowledge within my field of study through these past few years through the courses I have taken at UNM and I have also gained greater experience in scientific work through my internship. The skills I have because of such practices include ability to program in several different computer languages including Java, C+, HTML, and Matlab. I am proficient with database programs such as Navicat and ArcGIS, along with being familiar with servers and other database hardware and software. I am well equipped to carry out chemical reactions and other chemistry based experiments. Thank you for the opportunity for this application regarding the internship. I am excited to hear back from you about this truly rewarding and opportunistic opening. I am available by cell at ((505)-388-3487) or via email (PRay61@unm.edu).
