Abortion in the Medical Field
Abortions are a surgical procedure used to purposely terminate the pregnancy in a
woman. More specifically, an abortion is a process where the doctor is removing a fetus from the
womb of a female before it is able to live on its own. Even though the topic of abortion is
controversial in the United States, 44 million procedures are still being performed each year.
There are debates held worldwide about how abortions have different moral, legal, and ethical
issues. In some arguments, those who favor abortions often claim that woman have the right to
make their own decisions about their body. On the other hand, those who are against abortions
claim that the procedure is similar to murder and the fetus has a right to live just as anyone else.
Even though I stand with those who are against abortions, I feel as though women should only
have the right to get an abortion under critical circumstances. However, there are others that
argue against my stand and say that abortions should be used anytime whether the female has
control over the situation of getting pregnant or not. I believe that privilege of receiving an
abortion should not be abused how some woman are abusing it. There are woman that know
since they are able to receive an abortion they voluntarily have intercourse whenever and get
pregnant because they have the abortion to fall back on. Abortions are to be use in crucial times
where things cannot be handle in the proper way or the female had no control over the situation,
such as a woman being rape.

I have recently read an article written by Glenn Cohen titled, Are All Abortions Equal?
Should There Be Expectations to the Criminalization? In this article, it more so justified my
outlook on abortions then it did by going against it. In this article, Cohen stated, Someone may
voluntarily engage in a certain action and yet this would not entail that all her rights in regard to
voluntary intercourse and not taking the responsibility that comes behind the action. Most
woman do not look at the bigger picture that comes behind becoming pregnant, so therefor they
automatically turn to the option of receiving an abortion.
Now on the other hand the reason why I think that abortions should be used under
circumstances is because you have situations where a woman may be raped and become
pregnant. The woman has no control over the situation because she did not let it happen;
everything was just forced upon her. As said in, Are All Abortions Equal? Should There Be
Expectations to the Criminalization? Rape is, by definition, sex without a form of consent
deemed adequate by the law. Therefore, if the woman did not give consent into having
intercourse then it is subject to be recognize as rape. Even if the woman is under the influence,
there is no possible way that she could give 100% consent to give her body away.
Abortions are also very hard on the body as Cohen said, Abortions can cause an after
effect in death, so there will be two lives being destroyed instead of one. I do not understand
why I woman would want to put herself in the predicament on purpose. Somethings are just not
meant to be done to the body. Putting yourself at risk just as well as the baby just so you will be
able to get pleasure is selfish in my eyes and should be stopped.
Although some people would still argue against my claim, abortions should even be
used under any situation, I still feel that abortions should only be used under certain
circumstances. Abortion not only hinder the body but, they are being abused in the wrong way

when theyre woman who really need them because they werent in the situation to have a say so
on whether they wanted to have intercourse or not. Now in saying all of that I hope that this has
changed your outlook on how abortions should be used.
