ENGL 414

Reflections on written assignments

Picture Book evaluation and Caldecott exercise
This writing assignment was very beneficial. Having to search and find a book that I felt
met the criteria of a Caldecott winning book I really had to sit down and pay attention to what
makes a picture book great. The work and thought that went into this assignment will help me as
a teacher in that I will be more careful and selective of the books that I introduce to my class.
While all of them may not be award winning, a majority of them will be because I want them to
get the most they can out of their reading experience. This assignment was reminiscent of what I
go through when I am looking for a book to pair with my lesson plans in field. I always have to
look for an awesome book that also relates to the lesson somehow.
How long does it take to pick a Caldecott award recipient?
Poetry Anthology
This assignment helped open my eyes to the many kinds of childrens poetry, there is
literally a poem for everything and that is something I did not know! The work that I had to do
for this assignment will help me as a teacher because I had to find a theme and pick poems that
went with that specific theme. This reminds me of creating a unit plan; there is essentially a
specific theme that the subsequent lessons will revolve around so it is very important to pay
attention to the theme.
Is it every okay to do a poetry anthology with a mixed theme?
Fairy tale exploration
This assignment was a lot of fun because I really enjoy fairy tales! I read them a lot as a
kid so it was very interesting to read the different versions and the not-so-happy endings. I
learned that most of the time a fairy tale will have some kind of moral or lesson to be learned
which is a quality of most folk or fairy tales. This exploration reminded me of another
assignment that I had in a different course where we needed to break down a text and find
patterns and connections with modern day ideals.
Is it better to expose students to fairy tales that always have happy endings?
Annotated Bibliography

I was able to learn how to look further into the text and how to distinguish the
characteristics of a good story when it comes down to childrens literature. The work that went
into this assignment will help to teach me patience when it comes to doing the research and
preparations for units on literature when I become a teacher. This assignment reminded me of the
poetry anthology that we did at the beginning of the semester. It took just about the same amount
of time and patience to complete this assignment.
Where can I find other annotated bibliographies for childrens literature?

Reflections on Genres
Picture Books
I really enjoyed learning about the different types of picture books and the characteristics
that they held. It was interesting to see how each aspect of the book had an underlying meaning. I
believe that the students will really enjoy the stories that go along with the pictures and the
details of the pictures themselves.

I believe that Ive learned and remembered all I need to know about this genre.
Childrens poetry
This genre was a lot of fun to read I enjoyed how some of the poems were humorous and
light hearted and how others were the complete opposite. I believe that my students will enjoy
the fact that essentially poetry can be formless and very expressive. Poetry can be very exciting
and like stories and tales it can have a plot of its own.

Fairy tales
I loved this genre; I was really excited about reading fairy tales when I was younger so it
was pretty cool to be able to read all the different versions. I believe the students will really enjoy
the magical aspect of this genre. It will really appeal to their imaginations and get them excited
about the genre.

Novels for children in general
I really enjoyed reading all of the different types of childrens novels, it was very
interesting. It was a lot of fun for me because I hadnt read all of those novels as a child. I think
that some of my students will be able to relate to some of the characters in each of the stories,
since the characters often have something that they need to overcome.
-

Can relate to current situations in their lives

Depending on the novel, it can boost confidence (ex. Leslies braveness to stand up to a
bully in Bridge to Terabithia)

Realistic fiction
I enjoyed the fact that this genre was somewhat relatable, it is easier to identify with the
characters and their situations in realistic fiction. The students will be able to place themselves in
the characters shoes which is a good thing because they may be able to identify and understand
the plot more easily.

Modern Fantasy
I thought that this section was pretty amusing, it kept me entertained. I feel that my
students will be entertained and that this genre might appeal more so to those who may not enjoy
reading as much as others. It is important as educators that we try to get as many students to read
as possible, in order to become more fluent in reading they must practice. The students who may
struggle more than others or the ones who just dont really enjoy reading will need more
motivation and having books that will keep them interested really helps.

Historical Fiction
This genre was one of my favorites because I loved how it seemed so real. The
occurrences in this genre are mostly true but the characters are fictional and I think that the
students will relate well to that.

Multicultural Fiction
This genre was very interesting; I enjoyed getting to know the characteristics that go
along with this genre. I think that students will be able to learn tolerance from this genre because
they will have the opportunity to get a peek into the life that others may live.
