Description of Activities and Setting

I want everyone to think back to when we went to the natural science
center earlier this year. Close your eyes and think of some of the
animals that you saw that day. What kind of environment did the
penguins live in? Who can remind us what an environment is? (CFU)
What kind of environment did the turtles live in? I want you to turn and
talk to your neighbor about the difference in the environments of the
turtles and the penguins? (kids share) Now turn and talk to another
friend and share some ways that the animals are similar. There are so
many animals in the world but just like humans, there are a few things
that all the animals need. Lets look at this next activity to see some
ways animals are similar.
Im going to pull up some pictures from the science center of different
animals we saw last month. I want you to drag the pictures (Sun, air,
and assorted food) from the side to the image from the science center
that matches. For example, you would drag the air to the rabbit because
rabbits need air to live. You will all come up to the SmartBoard and
click on an image and drag it to the correct location to match what each
animal needs to live. Some may have more than one thing so just pick
one that matches. Each of you will take a turn to come and play the
game.
Earlier, we were talking about how animals have different
environments and different needs. Can someone tell me why it is
necessary for animals to eat and drink water? (CFU) Animals need to
eat and drink because that allows them to have energy and grow. I want
you think about how it can be hard to do your work when you are
extremely hungry. If you did not eat every day, you would not be big
and strong 1st graders. When you get to eat and drink water, that food

gives you energy to run and play every day. However, just like we are
different from horses, horses are different from fish. Animals that live
in different environments do not have the same needs. I want you to
take out of your notebook and draw two pictures. I want you to draw a
picture of a fish in the environment fish live in. I want you to draw a
picture of a horse in the environment it lives in. (I will write a list on
the board of the two environments and what they need to sustain life)
I need everyone to come over to the carpet and bring your journals and
a pencil. I am going to read a two nonfiction stories about animals that
life in completely different environments. I want someone to remind the
class what a nonfiction story is. (CFU) The first book is about animals
that live in the ocean. You will write down the needs of the animals
from both books and what kind of environment they live in in your
notebook. (At the end of writing in their journals they will go back to
their tables and write down any facts they did not include by talking to
their friends about what they wrote. Then you complete a worksheet
with two columns with information from your list and the facts from
your friends also. (One column will be for sea animals and the other
will be for animals that live in the woods in North America).
I have a worksheet for you all do that requires you to draw a picture of
10
animals living in the ocean in their natural habitat. After you draw the
minutes
picture, you will then label the things the animals need to survive in
their environment. I will show you an example worksheet of animals
living in the rainforest.
Assessment:
The assignment is out of 20 points (10 points per assignment)

- 10 points full credit is given because the student did a good drawing
with labels
- 5 points partial credit is given because the student did a drawing
with some detail and labeled/listed some needs of the animal in their
environment

Targeted Students Modifications/Accommodations
Three students in the class learned English as a
second language, so this activity would include a
lot of vocabulary that they are unfamiliar with. For
the activities that require writing, the students can
draw a picture for this time, and then they will
write down what we discuss as a group. (PID)

Student/Small Group Modifications/Accommodations:

In a small group setting, a group of students who have a
lower reading level will come with me to reread the story
while the rest work independently at their desk. I will ask
questions to help them think about what we are
discussing. Then we will work together as a small group
to accomplish what the other students are working on at
their tables. (PID)
