Jim MeGovern, PhD David Kennedy, PhD Patrick Mac Namara, MEng Wednesday 15th January 2014 9.30am - 12.00pm Answer 4 of the following 7 questions All questions carry equal marks Time Allowed : 2 1/2 Hours Given: ©2014 DIT Pro pT022/3 12900 MECH 3021 (a) A material subjected to combined direct and shear stresses can be said to represent a complete stress system for any condition of applied load in two dimensions. Draw a diagram of this element in two dimensions. (3 marks) Show by derivation how the equation for maximum and minimum principal stresses, 61, 02 can be found, ‘The equations for oy and tg, the direct and shear stresses on a plane at an angle 6, can be assumed and do not need to be derived separately. (7 marks) (>) A solid shaft of 200 mm diameter transmits 500 kW at 350 rpm. Determine: (a) The Torque on the shaft. (2 marks) (b) o,, c,,and 7, (4: matks) (c) The principal stresses: o,, 02, aNd Tay (5 marks) (d) The position of the plane on which the maximum principal stress acts and draw a diagram showing the position of the plane relative to the axis of the shaft. (4 matks) A.250 mm diameter solid shaft drives a screw propeller with an output of 7 MW. When the forward speed of the vessel is 35 km/h the speed of revolution of the propeller is 240 rev/min. Find: (a) The maximum stress resulting from the torque.
