INSTRUCTIONS

Hand hygiene

Prepare solution as instructed on package.

Sit on toilet to douche

Gently insert nozzle into vagina as far as tolerated


(May be easier if the nozzle is wet. No lubrication)

Let all content of douche flow into vagina

Remove douche and dispose of as indicate on


packaging.

Advantages: May be used


as a method of cleaning,
fresh feeling.
Disadvantages: Related to
infections and other health
issues. Risk of pregnancy is
present. Considered to be
an ineffective and
inaccurate as a means to
prevent pregnancy.
PERIODIC ABSTINENCE AND COITUS INTERUPTUS

WHAT IS IT?

Periodic Abstinence: Refraining from have sexual


intercourse. (No risks, inexpensive, effective)

Coitus Interuptus: A man withdraws penis from


the vagina prior to ejaculation. A.K.A. Pull-out
method. (Risk of pregnancy, STI. Effective with
male control, Inexpensive)

Hand Hygiene

Examine mucus from last menstrual cycle

Mucus obtained from introitus (not necessary to


reach into the vagina or cervix)

Do not douche prior to assessment

***SIDE EFFECTS: infection r/t improper hygiene.


Advantages: Woman can be knowledgeable about bodies
mucus, characteristics at ovulation and self evaluation.
Disadvantages:
Some women may be
uncomfortable with
the process of
obtaining a
specimen. Infection
may also occur
related to this
method. Risk of
pregnancy .

Results are based on compliance


and accuracy of selected method.

WHAT IS IT?
Vaginal douching is the process of intra-vaginal
cleansing with a liquid solution. Normally used for
personal hygiene or anesthetic reasons, for preventing
or treating infection, to cleanse after menstruation or
sex, and to prevent pregnancy.
***Douching may cause: PID, ectopic pregnancy,
vaginal irritation, and infections.

Record # of days in each cycle (from 1 day of


menses for a period of 6 cycles)

INSTRUCTIONS
During ovulation the body temperature drops.
Measure body temperature prior to getting out of bed
each morning to monitor ovulation.

To get start of fertile period: subtract 18 days from the


number of days in the womans SHORTEST cycle (A)

Advantages: Inexpensive, convenient, no side effects


Disadvantages: There are many variables that affect
the reliability of results. Accuracy depends on the
interpretation of temperature changes, stress, fatigue,
illness, alcohol, and your sleeping environment. Risk
of pregnancy.

To get end of fertile period: subtract 11 days from the


number of days in the womans LONGEST cycle (B)
Fertile period is from (A) day to (B) day.
Advantages: Most useful when combined with basal body
temperature or cervical mucus method. Inexpensive.
Disadvantages: Not very reliable. Requires accurate record
keeping and compliance in regard to abstinence during
fertile periods. Many factors can affect the time of ovulation,
may be unpredictable. Risk of pregnancy.

BILLINGS METHOD
! WHAT IS IT?
Following ovulation the cervical mucus (under the
influence of estrogen and progesterone) becomes
thin and flexible to allow for sperm viability and
motility. The ability for the mucus to stretch
between the fingers is t its greatest point during
ovulation (Spinnbarkeit Sign).

The recording of a womans menstrual cycle by
calculating her fertile period (assuming ovulation
occurs about 14 days before the onset of her next
menstrual period)
