Inquiry Synthesis

Overview

Social Justice

Throughout this
semester our
professional learning
pod has been asked to
look at three different
subjects, social justice,
governance, and special
needs. Each week was
dedicated to a different
subject. As individual
members of the pod; at
the beginning of each
week we were expected
to pick an inquiry
question of interest to
us. Throughout the week
we were to research and
answer our own
question. Then at the
end of every week we
got together as a group
to discuss our findings.
This document serves
as a summary of my
own personal aha

Teacher Takeaways
Social Justice can be a very sensitive issue, especially with growing concern over inclusion, and respecting diversity. While
there are many different types of social justice, from our inquiry I found that whether you are dealing with the aftermath of
residential schools, religion, special needs, or racism etc. it is important to approach the topic with an open mind, open
heart, and foster a caring trusting, compassionate environment so all students feel safe no matter their individual needs,
views, beliefs.

Governance, however dry it may be is an important part of being an effective teacher. This inquiry week gave me a deeper
understanding of my rights as a teacher, the decision making process (from a trustee perspective), and the role of public
health inside public education. I believe that understanding the governing system is an important part of practicing
professionalism, understanding the governing system allows you to effectively collaborate, and contribute to the community.
Special Needs is an area of education that you can never know too much about. As teacher it is important for me to
understand the designation coding, because It is crucial for my ability to read an IEP and effectively teach that student. RTI
is a system that I believe will have a positive impact on students. As an educator in Nanaimo it is a crucial element for me
to have a deep understanding of, and as an individual I believe in what it is setting out to achieve. In my opinion
collaboration is an important part of teaching, especially with parents; they know their child better than anyone and can
provide great insight into being an effective teacher.
