Emergent Reading Assessment

RDNG 361
Name: Brock
Age:6
Grade: 1st

Evaluator: Robyn Pavlicek

Date of Evaluation: October 7, 2015

Student Information: Brock is a first grader at Sacred Heart Catholic School. Since he
attends a Catholic school one of the tests I did he had never seen before. He likes to talk
once he warmed up to me and was very cooperative.

Assessments Administered: Two Peas Phonological Awareness, CORE Phonics SurveyParts A-D, Abduls Birthday Present

Student Observations: Brock was shy at first but he listened to my directions and was
very cooperative. I had to go over some of the directions more than once so he could
understand what he needed to do.

Assessment Results:
Two Peas Phonological Assessment:
Needs correction: Single Syllable Onset-Rime Segmenting, Syllable Segmenting &
Counting, Phoneme Segmenting, and Phoneme Deletion, Rhyme Production, Phoneme
Alliteration & Discrimination, Phoneme Isolation of Final Sounds
No Correction: Counting Words in a Spoken Sentence, Rhyme Recognition, Single
Syllable Onset-Rime Blending, Syllable Blending & Pronouncing, Phoneme Isolation of
Initial Sounds, Phoneme Isolation of Medial Sounds, Phoneme Blending, Phoneme
Addition, Phoneme Substitution.

CORE Phonics Survey: Brock scored at Benchmark on this survey. He went fast
through some parts of the test but got every letter and sound correct.

Retelling and Listening Comprehension: Brock mastered using complete sentences in
retelling the passage. He mastered capturing the salient idea of each event. He is
developing sequences events cohesively. He mastered incorporation of vocabulary from
the passage and he is developing retelling the passage with prosody.

Summary: Brock did very well on the CORE Phonics Survey. He scored at benchmark
and had no trouble sounding out his vowels and consonants. On the Two Peas
Phonological Awareness Assessment Brock had the most trouble on Phoneme
Segmenting and Syllable Segmenting & Counting. To help Brock with Syllable
segmenting we could have him breakdown the word to see each syllable. To help Brock
with Phoneme segmenting you could give Brock more instruction on the sounding out of
words. On the reading comprehension and retell Brock answered all questions I asked
him correctly. At Sacred Heart they do not do retells as assessments so I had to walk
Brock through this. Once he understood how to use the pictures he was able to retell me
the story pretty well. Brock did very well overall and he only needs correction in a few
areas.

Reflection
The Emergent Literacy Assessment was overall a good experience for me. It gave me an
idea of what it will be like as a teacher assessing my future students. The Retell part of
the assessment was a part that I did very well on. I read the reading in a calm manner and
was able to explain to my student what I needed from him for the assessment. One thing I
need to change is explaining what the student needs to do for each section on the Two
Peas Phonological Awareness Assessment, I was kind of nervous and I feel like for some

of the sections I didnt clearly explain to him. Being a future teacher this was a good
experience for me to have.
