To check for prior knowledge students will answer: Does anyone remember what a noun
is? Does anybody remember what an adjective is? Does anybody remember what a
verb is? Why would we incorporate these kinds of words into our writing?
Students will participate in the group discussion, bingo activity and individually write out
their own sentences using the provided nouns and adjectives.

Introduction
Give each student a green and red popsicle stick. Explain that
green means that they understand, yellow means that they
somewhat understand and the red means that they do not
yet understand.
Ask students: Does anyone remember what a noun is? Does anybody
remember what an adjective is? Does anybody remember what a verb is?
Does anyone remember what a conjunction is? Why would we
incorporate these kinds of words into our writing?
Students are to participate in all activities in a
respectful manner.
Students are expected to raise their hands before
speaking in the group setting.

2. Story Time- Hello Ocean: Students will be
encouraged to point out the nouns, adjectives and
verbs in the story
3. Popsicle Stick Sentences- Students will construct
their own sentences using the nouns, adjectives and
verbs provided. When they finish their sentences they
can switch with a partner and share the sentences
that they have come up with.
4. Sticky Note Brainstorm- Students will receive three
different coloured sticky notes- They will come up with
their own noun, adjective and verb then place their
answers on the white board.
5. Pronouns and Adverbs6. Mad Lib- Students will be asked to join you on the
carpet and encouraged to come up with their own
nouns, adjectives, and verbs.
Review of nouns/Introduction to adjectives
Body
Story Time/Discussion: Students will identify nouns,
adjectives and verbs within the story.
Encourage all students to contribute to the group discussion
to check for understanding. Understanding will also be
checked with the popsicle sticks- Green = Noun Yellow
=Adjective and Red = Verb.
Popsicle Stick Sentences: Ask the students to go back to
their desks and take out their Language Arts journals.
Individually students will use the popsicle sticks they received
at the carpet to create sentences. Ask the students to identify
the noun with a green underline, the adjective with a yellow
underline and the verb with a red underline. Once they are
done they can trade popsicle sticks with someone else in the
room and repeat the process of making a story. Explain that
you want as many sentences as they can come up with in 10
minutes.

The students sentences will be handed in to be assessed.


Sticky Note Brainstorm: Students will receive three
different coloured sticky notes- They will come up with their
own noun and place it on the green sticky note, adjective and
place it on the and verb then place their answers on the white
board. We will then use the words on the board to create a
reference list in their journals. Explain that they can look at
this list when doing anything that requires creative writing.
Assess each student as they come up to the board. Make sure
that their words are going into the right category.
Adverbs and Pronouns:
Mad Lib: As a group students will provide a number of nouns,
adjectives and verbs that can be used to create a story. When
all the spots all filled up read the story out loud to the group.
Closure
Check for understanding throughout the lesson with the
green and red popsicle sticks
Discussion
Popsicle sticks- While students are working on their individual
sentences check for understanding using the popsicle sticks.

After the lesson is done, commend the students on their


focus, cooperation and behavior to reinforce for future
lessons. If there is work needed, inform the students of areas
that could be improved in the future again to provide focus
for future lessons.
Explain that in the next class we will be writing our own
creative stories using nouns, adjectives and verbs.
