WITH A GROWING list we are moving to six-monthly catalogues. In the first half of
2016 we will, I hope, strengthen our reputation with original and socially important
works that in a number of cases can be expected to stand as the key reference in their
intellectual area for years to come.
There is the autobiography of Frank Vajda, who survived the holocaust in Hungary
and went on to devote his life in Australia, in part, to revering the memory of Raoul
Wallenberg, the Swedish diplomat credited with working heroically to save Jews at that
moment. Vajdas account is especially pertinent now, as the official memory of the Nazi
invasion, within Hungary, becomes increasingly contested.
No less relevant, at a time of mass population pressure and continuing state violence,
is Whos Afraid of International Law, edited by Rai Gaita and Gerry Simpson. And Farid
Bezhan may rightly claim to have produced the first study of the nature of life for women
in contemporary Afghanistan that is grounded in solid scholarly research.
I am hopeful Small Screens: Essays on Contemporary Australian Television will be a
new kind of cultural study, drawing on scholarly expertise and a critical eye to engage
productively with a form of truly popular culture so often shunned by Cultural Studies
intellectuals.
And Im excited by the innovative, content-enriched Manga Vision: Cultural and
Communicative Perspectives.
Our press continues to increase its impact, with sales and revenue growing every
year since our launch in 2010. This growth was particularly marked in 2015 and we

Sally Dammery practised clinical midwifery for many years, developing a deep interest
in the diversity of cultural beliefs and traditions among the women she attended. Travelling
widely increased this interest and led to formal study of anthropology and history. Her
previous publications include the ethnography Walter George Arthur: a Free Tasmanian?
which shared the Ian Turner History Prize in 2001, and the biography of her enigmatic
grandmother, She Lived in Launceston: Isobel Horner of Waratah House, winner of the Lilian
Watson Family History Award 2006.

At a time when the memory of this period of Hungarian history is increasingly contested,

Culture in Australia since 1945 (2009). In 2014 Michelle, Catherine Freyne and Timothy
Nicastri won the NSW Premiers Multimedia History Prize for the radio documentary Public
Intimacies: The 1974 Royal Commission on Human Relationships.
Jeannine Baker is a historian and documentary maker in the Department of Media, Music,
Communication and Cultural Studies at Macquarie University. She is the author of Australian
Women War Reporters: Boer War to Vietnam (NewSouth, 2015). Her most recent radio
documentary is Holding a Tiger by the Tail: Jessie Litchfield (2015).
Clare Monagle is a historian of ideas, concentrating primarily on theology in the Middle
Ages and medievalism in the twentieth century. She is a Senior Lecturer in Modern History
at Macquarie University. She is currently working on a feminist history of scholastic theology,
on the history of emotions, and on the theology of womens liberation.

Nigel Bertram is a Director of NMBW Architecture Studio in Melbourne and Practice
Professor of Architecture at Monash University, where his current research projects address
urban housing and infrastructure for water-sensitive cities. NMBWs architectural work has
been published and awarded across categories including urban design, housing, small public
works, adaptive re-use of existing buildings, and peripheral urban design strategies.
Hiroshi Nakao is Professor of Multidisciplinary Design Science at the Shonan Institute
of Technology. He studied architecture at the Kyoto Institute of Technology and art at the
Tsukuba University, and works across the border between art and architecture, with solo
exhibitions in Tokyo, Oslo, London and Hamburg to his credit.

Sarah Pasfield-Neofitou is a lecturer in

an art exhibition catalogue.
Cathy Sell is a Translation Studies PhD candidate within the School of Languages, Cultures

Across most of the world, an entire generation has lived free from the spectre of polio,
but for fifty years during the twentieth century that fear was overwhelming. Polio became
every parents worst nightmare, and panic drove people to do bizarre things to protect
their children. Survivors of the disease and treatment often found that they faced a world
unfriendly to their disability.
In pre-Second World War Australia, how best to treat polio survivors was fiercely debated
and generated a rift between the medical community and those advocating alternative
therapies. Two women symbolised this rift. In Victoria, Dr Jean Macnamara used splints,
plaster casts and braces to immobilise patients, an approach that, by the 1950s, most Western
countries had abandoned. In her clinics in Australia, and later in the United States, Sister
Elizabeth Kenny championed and practised a different approach involving little or no
constraint on the paralysed body, the application of gentle exercise of the muscles in the
early, acute stage of the disease, and the use of hot packs to relieve pain and muscle spasm
and tightness.
Dancing in My Dreams describes the disease of polio and its treatment, the scientific
endeavour that led to the discovery of the poliovirus, and the studies in virology and
immunology that culminated in the production of a polio vaccine. It highlights the
experiences of patients and the voices of survivors, revealing how ethnicity, class, age and
gender all mediated individuals reactions to the disease, which included fear, rejection,
denial and anger.
Despite the vaccination programs initiated by the World Health Organization, the poliovirus has not been eliminated globally. In three countries, Nigeria, Pakistan and Afghanistan,
the wild poliovirus remains endemic. The striking 50-year decline in the incidence of polio
has stalled, leading to falling levels of immunity in populations. As the frequency of polio
epidemics has declined, so too has the collective memory of the experience of the disease,
with the growth of anti-vaccine sentiment in many societies a complicating issue.
There is no cure for polio. The treatment for polio today remains the same as it was forty
years ago. The only way to prevent future epidemics of polio is by vaccinating the population.
If the poliovirus cannot find an unvaccinated individual to infect, it will die out. But the
success of a vaccination program depends on the cooperation of all individuals to ensure
the common good. As long as a single person remains infected with polio, all unvaccinated
children throughout the world are at risk.

The Ninja Case in East Java

extraordinary story that of a witch-hunt and ninja craze that
swept a region of Java, Indonesia, in 1998. When neighbours, family
members and friends believed that one among them was a sorcerer,
this suspicion would sometimes culminate in the death of the suspect.
In 1998, these sporadic killings turned into an outbreak of violence.
Muslim organisations attributed the escalation of these killings to
political conspirators, alleging that squads of ninjas were responsible. A paramilitary group
(Banser NU) began preparing and training for an onslaught of further violence, while anxious
residents throughout East Java established road-side guards. Dozens of suspected ninjas were
caught and some were tortured and killed.
Using first-hand accounts, Herriman provides these events with a detailed context and
history and analyses their development in terms of the interplay of national institutions and
local culture and dynamics.

In Timors chequered history, many other nation states have been involved.
The prime purpose of this book is to examine the role of the British in Timors
past. Timor was not a part of the British empire, nor important to its commerce.
However, Timor had a long relationshipindeed its longestwith Portugal.
Britains interest was thus largely indirect. Indirect as it was, this interest had two
peaks, marked by the Second World War and by the decolonisation of Southeast
Asia. These are recognised in this book, with the former being the concern of the
first four chapters, and the latter the focus of the last four.
The book concludes with an account of the Indonesian incorporation of Timor
into its territory. During this time, reporting by British diplomats was still copious
and perceptive. Britainwhich had by now withdrawn from Singaporeadopted
only a very limited policy-making role. But though its interest was more indirect
than ever, its role had implications for the independence that the Timorese finally
secured. Tarling suggests from this that post-colonial states are successor states of
empire.

Political parties have always been fundamental to Australias representative

democracy. As organisations, however, their continued centrality and
longevity depend upon their ability to respond to changing political, social
and technological circumstances, such as declining levels of membership and
partisan affiliation, and the rise of social media.

nearly a decade we bring together many of the leading scholars of Australian
politics to examine the evolving role and relevance of political parties
today. Chapters explore the diversity of Australian parties organisational
arrangements, the contemporary challenges they face, and the institutions

THIS IS the first book to consider the experiences of women survivors of the 1965
anti-communist violence in the majority Christian region of Eastern Indonesia. So far,
most studies of the 1965 violence have focused on the Muslim majority population of
Java and the Hindu majority population of Bali. Forbidden Memories presents stories
from across the regions of Sumba, Sabu, Alor, Kupang and other parts of West Timor
of women who were imprisoned and tortured or whose husbands were murdered. The
book comprises a critical examination of the role of the Protestant Church at the time
of the violence and, in its aftermath, the ongoing sanctions and political purges against
those considered to be supporters of the Indonesian Communist Party. The writers argue
that religious and state institutions failed to care for this vulnerable community in the
face of state terrorism and a culture of fear.
The editors and research team hope this publication will create a safe and peaceful
environment for survivors to tell their stories and have their stories acknowledged by
their society.

IN INDONESIA, the legacy of Raden Ajeng Kartini (18791904) is celebrated on

Kartini Day, 21 April, every year. Around the world Kartini is recognised as a major
figure in the history of the advancement of women, a tireless and effective advocate
of womens education and emancipation. However, this is the first complete and
unexpurgated collection of Kartinis published articles, memoranda and correspondence
ever published in any language.
This collection reveals Kartinis importance as a pioneer of the Indonesian nationalist
movement. Claiming in her letters and petitions her peoples right to national autonomy
well before her male compatriots did so publicly, Kartini used her writing in an attempt
to educate the Netherlands and Dutch colonialists about Java and the aspirations of
its people. Had she lived longer, she would have been one of Indonesias leading preindependence writers as well as an educationalist. In 1964 she was elevated to the status
of national hero by Indonesias first president, Sukarno. She has become one of the most
well known Asian figures in the international womens movement.
The product of several decades study and based on archival sources, Kartini is
extensively annotated and provided with an authoritative historical introduction by
one of the worlds leading Kartini authorities. This work will be the essential resource
for scholars and students of Kartini and her place in Indonesian history, around the
world, for many years to come.

The nations of Scandinavia and Finland, or Nordic Europe, continue to provide

living proof that economic prosperity can be combined with social equality and
environmental responsibility. This book, written from an Australian perspective,
explores previous outside policy interest in the Nordic nations and outlines some
lessons which the English-speaking world, in particular, can learn now from the
achievements of the four main Nordic European nations. In terms of income
distribution these countries are still much more equal than Australia, Britain,
New Zealand and Canada and nearly twice as equal as the United States.
Workforce participation rates are high in the Nordic nations but working hours
remain within reasonable limits, enabling genuine worklife balance. Sweden
has played a leading role in improving wellbeing, and lowering poverty, among
children. Finland has achieved stunning success in schools since the 1990s.
Denmark invests in comprehensive skills training as part of providing security,
as well as flexibility, in peoples employment lives. Norways taxation approach
and other measures ensure that its natural resources are used sustainably for
the entire nations long-term wealth. All of these achievements are relevant to
the policy choices for the future which Australia, and other English-speaking
countries, can now make.
Dr Andrew Scott is Professor in Politics and Policy at Deakin University,
Melbourne. He is the author of four previous books and numerous book chapters
and articles on aspects of politics, policy and history, frequently involving
international comparisons. For several years Andrew has been researching
English-speaking nations past interest in and lessons they can learn from
the policy achievements of the Nordic European nations.

Simpson, Steven Tudor, Geoffrey Brahm Levey, Dorothy Scott, Christopher
Cordner, Craig Taylor and Miranda Fricker, along with an introductory piece
by J.M. Coetzee. Other features of the collection include a new poem for Gaita
by poet and screenwriter Nick Drake and an interview with Gaita by Anne
Manne, in which Gaita reflects on the origins and development of his ethical
thought as a form of lucidity.

Peter BeIlharz is Professor of Culture and Society at Curtin University.

For many years he was Professor of Sociology and Director of the Thesis Eleven
Centre for Cultural Sociology at La Trobe University. He has published 24 books
and 200 papers across five continents. His major works include Imagining the
Antipodes (1997) and Sociology Antipodean Perspectives, with Trevor Hogan
(2012). He has been affiliated with Harvard, Yale and Leeds universities, and with
STIAS in South Africa, with Sian Supski.

In 1956 Bernard Smith wrote that we in Australia were migratory birds. This
was to become a leading motif of his own thinking, and a significant inspiration
for Peter Beilharz. Beilharz came to argue that the idea of the antipodes made
sense less in its geographical than its cultural form, viewed as a relation rather
than a place. Australians had one foot here and one there, whichever there this
was. This way of thinking with and after Bernard Smith makes up one current of
Beilharzs best Australian essays.
Two other streams contribute to the collection. The second recovers and
publicises antipodean intellectuals, from Childe to Evatt to Stretton to Jean
Martin, who have often been overshadowed here by the reception given to
metropolitan celebrity thinkers; and examines others, like Hughes and Carey,
who have been celebrated as writers more than as interpreters of the antipodean
condition.
The third stream engages with mainstream views of Australian writing, and
with the limits of these views. If we think in terms of cultural traffic, then the
stories we tell about Australia will also be global and regional in a broader sense.
