Basic Skin Structure
Layers of skin involved in acne
Epidermis: upper most layer; protects muscle/ underlying layers; controls body
temperature

Dermis: true skin contains all structures vital to skin function


Skin structures and functions involved in acne
Sebaceous glands: secretes oil; moisturizes the skin; lubricates the hair follicle
Hair follicles: also known as pore
Follicular epithelium: cells lining the follicle
Acne Vulgaris
Acne vulgaris is a skin condition characterized by blockage and/or inflammation
of pilosebaceous units
There are three classifications of acne based of morphology
There are three common subtypes or grading of acne based on what one has
Classifications
Comedonal: opened and closed comedones
Inflammatory: papules and pustules
Nodulocystic: nodules and cysts

Abnormal desquamation of follicular epithelium; results in hyperkeratosis
