Final Draft Assignment

In this assignment, I ask you to write an analytical paper of four to five pages,
comparing and contrasting the cartoon below and an image text of your choice (and
about the same tragedy).

First, contemplate on the cartoon I provided and the image you chose and write
whatever thoughts and memories come to mind. Then, to generate more ideas,
imagine you are the photographer of the photo and the artist of the cartoon; this will
help you think of and reflect on the rhetorical situation. Raise and answer questions
like: Where does your eye travel in looking at these images? What do you first notice:
a person, a color, a word, etc.? What is the context of the two image texts? Who is the
intended and unintended audience? What is the artist/photographer purpose behind
such image texts? How do the two image texts command your attention and
encourage you to interact with and respond to the information given? How are the
three argumentative appeals (pathos, logos, and ethos) evident here? And which of
these appeals is most prominent in the two visual texts? Are these demand or offer
images, and why? How does this affect the message or the tone of the two image
texts? How is color used in both? Does this create a particular mood or feeling? What
people, areas of life, or experiences are left out, silenced? What messages do these
image texts convey? What strengths and weaknesses do both have, and what would
you change? What cultural assumptions or values seem to be involved in these
images? In what website (other media) did the image texts appear? Would they have
appeared differently if you choose a different website?
Second, I suggest you read about the real context (story) of this cartoon, if any, as this
knowledge (reading an image within its real context) will help you while analyzing.
Make sure you document the sources you take the information from.
In brief, analyze the choice of word, design, contrast, and color, and explain the
relationship, if any, between the two images and the words that accompany them. Do
text and image work together? Does one predominate over the other? Set a
comparison and draw a contrast between both image texts. Delve into the two and
discuss the reasoning behind the choices the photographer/artist made about them.

2) Is your topic sentence, thesis, clear?
3) How well do you organize your analysis and develop your argument? Is there an
abrupt or smooth transition from one paragraph to another? Is your paper coherent?
4) Do your sentences vary in type (simple, compound, complex) and arrangement
(periodic, loose, and medial)? Do you employ some figures of speech in shaping your
sentences?
5) How well do you explain the rhetorical situation of the image texts? Is your
elaboration of the context, the audience, the purpose, and the stance rhetorical?
6) How well do you analyze the two image texts in light of Aristotle's three
argumentative appeals (ethos, pathos, and logos)?
7) Do you draw on the image-text relationship?
8) Do you provide some explanation to the contrast within the cartoon and that
between the cartoon and the photo?
9) Do you write your analytical paper to me, and is your rationale 4-5 double-spaced
pages in length?
