What is the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic?

The Maritime Museum is the oldest maritime museum and the largest in Canada. It is an education and
historical institution that offers aspects of Nova Scotias marine history. Visitors are taken to a time
when war was prevalent and the world relied heavily on the navy.

What can I do at The Maritime Museum of the Atlantic?

There is lots to do and see at the Museum, such as taking part in some of their many events posted on
the website also they offer various programs, tours and talks relating to folklore and tales of pirates and
privateers of the North Atlantic.

Are there activities for my family at the Maritime Museum?

Every second Sunday of the month is Family day at the museum starting at 1:30 p.m. with activities for
the whole family. Some have limited space so it is good to sign up in advance.

Where is the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic located?

The museum is located in Halifaxs beautiful waterfront at 1675 Lower Water Street, Halifax. The area is
great for tourists and locals, offering different shops, galleries and restaurants along the harbourfront.

Is there any research funding at the museum?

Yes, the museum gives annual research grants relating to marine history. They also collaborate with
others to research topics related to marine history. The museum has several people conducting research
involved with maritime history as well they have a reference library that can be accessed by
appointment. Much of the results from the research are featured in the museums lecture series and in
research papers.

What kinds of displays or collections does the museum have?

The Maritime Museum has many collections such as The Royal Canadian Navy, Canadian Merchant
Marine, Nova Scotia Small Craft and Ship Wreck, which includes over 24,000 artifacts. Along with sailors
souvenirs, naval ship badges and telescopes. There is history and artifacts from the Titanic including
shoes on the unknown Titanic child.

How can I support the Maritime Museum?

If you have objects that relate the Nova Scotias cultural, marine or industrial heritage that are in good
condition and complete they would accept the donation. If you know the history and relevance of the
object it will give it more value. You may be eligible for a tax receipt upon donating your historical
object.
