Action Stories- Focus on Physical Activity

Christina Cariolato
October 14th 2015

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Students will:
1. Create an action story, incorporating physical fitness with the template each student is given.
2. Narrate this story to their fellow classmates in a way that physical activity will be an important part of the
story and students will act out these actions and characters using their body.

ASSESSMENTS
Observations:

Observe students participating in a physical manner.

Watch students exploring their creativity and students utilizing their creativity to
incorporate physical activity and the template they were able to choose from.

Key Questions:

To Students: How can you make a variation to the story to make it harder for your
classmates?
To Students: How can you make sure your classmates arent looking at this activity as
stressful?
To myself: How will I ensure that each student is focused on the physical activity
aspect, rather than being sedentary and listening to the stories being told?

Products/Performances:

Are my students participating?

Are they being physically active?
Are they having FUN?

MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT

An open area (gymnasium or classroom)
Create action cards for students in lower grades to
follow a guideline so its easier for them (you dont
have to include these)

PROCEDURE
Introduction
Attention Grabber

Transition to Body

Go over the Physical education summary

- Explain that physical activity is not only in the classroom
- Go over the 4 General Outcomes and how each outcome is not only related
to being physically active (cooperation, benefits of health)
- Leave some information for the students to read to encourage students to
read in on their own time.

2 Min

Review that physical activity does not have to be only in an gymnasium

- have students come up with examples of where physical education is seen
outside the gymnasium
- Introduce the activity now (classroom based activity)
- Allow each student to pick a card from the pile (which has the base
template of their story they will be creating)
- Split the students up into groups of 4-6 depending on how big the class is.

Learning Activity #1

Time

Student Centered Activity

- Each student will take turns being the narrator amongst their groups and
creating a story that allows their classmates to become active through
identifying physical actions through the story.

Time
8-10 Min
(depending
on # of
people in
each group)

Assessments/ Differentiation

- Assessment: Ensure students are participating and incorporating physical

-

movement by walking around (walk around to several groups if you have a

big class)
As a teacher, you could even participate with the students.
For differentiation: Instead of students following the template, allow students
to create their own personal story customizing it to their preferences
For differentiation: each action card has a different theme and action words
associated with it.
Closure/Cliffhanger

Assessment of Learning:

During
activity

Time

- This lesson is intended for a physical activity brain break in the classroom
and there is not a connecting lesson to this.

- I would do assessment for learning during this activity as mentioned above.

- Assessment of learning does not apply as students aren't getting marked or

3 Min

assessed on the quality of their story, as long as they followed the action
card.

Transition To Next Lesson

- Have students sit and cool down and discuss amongst themselves what the
liked and what the didn't like about the activity.

- Have students create a list of appropriate words and physical actions that

2 Min

could be used for next time this activity is done.

Reflections

What went well? What

changes would you make
in your planning? What
have you learned to
improve upon future
instruction?
