Dimension 10. Impact on Student Learning
Artifact: Lesson Plan on Polynomial Equations and Their Applications and Addition,
Subtraction, Multiplication, and Division of the Rational Expressions (with students quizzes)
Discussion:
I used factoring and rational expressions of lesson plans on the topic of Polynomial
Equations and Their Applications and Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, and Division of the
Rational Expressions (with students quizzes) as an artifact for Dimension 10. This series of
lesson plans was created while I was student teaching in Manhattan Hunter Science High School.
I was teaching College Algebra for which students need to pass the state standard exam (Algebra
Regents) and SAT. The topic of Polynomial equations and rational expressions are two of the
topics covered in the Regents Exam.
In this artifact, a factoring and rational expression of lessons was shown as well as the
assessment of the students learning on these specific topics. This assessment contained openended questions, which required students to present their answers mathematically and verbally.
The first question was basically factor and solve quadratic equation. The second question was
very easy to find the domain of the given rational function, which was already covered in the 8 th
grade or even mention before. The fourth and fifth questions basically were about multiplying,
dividing and adding rational expressions. The last one was more confuse to find the Least
Common Denominator (LCD) of two basic two rational expressions. All students worked very
hard and these I am going to show few of the quizzes I collected. They all understand, and have a
good idea what is covering in the class. I think I have a very good impact on my students,
because they all understand me and I see the students higher grades which makes me very happy.
