A. Background

Swedish Music Unit

Grade Level: 5
Introduction & Context:
o I chose Swedish music because my moms family is Swedish and lives
in Sweden. I was exposed to the music through my mom and her
family so Ive always known the folk songs of Sweden. Im attracted to
it because its music I grew up with and know. I think that Swedish
and Scandinavian culture in general is widely underappreciated.
o Swedish culture is often described as accepting and welcoming.
Swedes love coffee hour, called Fika. They dont drink as much alcohol
as other European countries. They love to sing. Of about 9 million
people in Sweden, 600,000 are members of choirs. Indie and Pop
music is very common in Sweden nowadays. There are also a
surprising amount of death metal listeners and bands hailing from
Sweden. There are some great authors from Sweden including the late
Astrid Lindgren who wrote many childrens stories that are popular in
many places, not just Sweden. National costumes are used on
traditional holidays, such as Midsommar in June. Midsommar is the
second most celebrated holiday other than Christmas in Sweden.
These are important folk aspects of the culture and tradition.
o The folk music was a larger part of peoples lives until pop groups
such as Robyn, ABBA, and Icona Pop started forming and drawing a
more modern view of music to the countrys culture. Max Martin, a
Swedish songwriter, has written 21 number one hits in the past 15
years including hits from the Backstreet Boys, Britney Spears, Katy
Perry, Pink, Maroon 5, and Taylor Swift. Martin is in 3rd place for
number of no. 1 hits on the charts, only beat by Paul McCartney and
John Lennon.
o The music education scene in Sweden is phenomenal. Because they
have a social welfare program, artists are not afraid of landing on the
streets, so they have the liberty to go for their dreams. The after
school music programs are becoming more closely connected to the
academic school programs, but most are still free or very cheap. Most
students are exposed to programs that teach electronic, classical, or
pop music and many others sing in choral groups. There is a lot of
music in Swedes daily lives.
o The music is similar to traditional German and other Nordic music. It
sounds like a combination of different musical varieties. Violin is very
prevalent in the music, ad is by far the most widespread instrument in
folk music. This was because centuries ago the violin was very

portable to bring to parties and festivals and it could carry a lively

tune. The most classic Swedish folk music is much like the polka,
schottische and waltz. The accordion and clarinet are also used in
Swedish folk music, and this is also true for Northern European folk
music is general.

B. Lesson Content Outline

By the end of this unit students will:

o be familiar with the traditional Swedish musical instruments from the
folk music of centuries ago
o be able to sing the Swedish National Anthem in English.
o know several childrens stories and a folk song that goes along with
each
o dance and sing a Midsommar song
o be able to dance a traditional Swedish partner dance
o know a little bit about Swedish history and the countrys place in
Europe and the world

A list of repertoire (songs, listening pieces, poems, stories etc.) that you
are planning to use in the Unit.
o Intro to Sweden in Powerpoint
Swedish National Anthem (in English)
o Astrid Lindgren, author, and her legacy
Pippi Longstocking short story, with short intro about Astrid
Lindgren
o Hr kommer Pippi Lngstrump- childrens song, chorus only in
Swedish
o Midsommar Info
Vi aro musikanter- Midsommar/holiday traditional song and
dance
o Hambo national folk dance of Sweden
expanding on folk dance

Brief description to show that you will have a variety of activities in the
lessons.
o 1: In the first lesson we will briefly go over a few facts about Sweden
in a Powerpoint with many pictures. This way, the students have
some sort of background on the people they will be learning about in
this unit. I will have them listen to the national anthem of Sweden, in
Swedish, and then learn the songs English lyrics
o 2: I would like them to learn about the most important childrens
author from Sweden, Astrid Lindgren. I will introduce her life and her
works and then we will read a story she wrote, familiar to children
everywhere, Pippi Longstocking. We would then learn a song about
Pippi in Swedish.
o 3: A very important holiday for Swedes is Midsommar, the first day of
summer, and the longest day of the year. I will teach them about
Midsommar and we will create our own Midsommar by learning the
song, Vi aro musikanter, and the accompanying dance.
o 4: Folk dance is very important in Sweden. It is based around the
concept of couple dancing. I will teach them about the Hambo, the
unofficial national dance of Sweden and then they will learn it.
