Reflection #4
Interpersonal Violence Presentation
Interpersonal violence is defined as "the intentional use of physical force or power,
threatened or actual, against another person or against a group or community that results in or
has a high likelihood of resulting in injury, death, psychological harm, maldevelopment, or
deprivation." Last week in my UCOL class, we had a lady to come and do a wonderful and very
informative presentation of this topic. It taught me a lot about the different types of situations.
Some of the different types of interpersonal violence are abuse, bullying, dating/relationship
violence, sexual violence, youth violence and gang violence. However, in her presentation, we
focused more on the side of, sexual assault (rape), consent, and stalking. All of things in which
are very common on a college campus. So its very beneficial for all of us to be aware and know
how to handle the situations if it ever may occur.
Last week we also learned how to handle this situations if we were to encounter them in
person. First in full most, if anything like that happens the cops and your parents should be the
first to know. If you are on campus, you may also alert your professors of the situations.
However, if you tell your professors, under the title 9 law, they are required to alert the
authorities. Also if something like this happens and you want to take a different route, you can
contact UNCCs Center for Wellness Promotion. Or just go to the student health center. There are
certified counselors there who you can talk to and the authorities are not required to be

contacted. Some of them, like the lady who gave the presentation last week has an open door
policy, meaning that you can talk to her at any time about anything. Also your RA is on the list of
people who you can tell as well.
We also learned that consent must be obvious. A rape charge is easy to catch now in days.
Especially when alcohol or drugs are involved. Also, people like to use the word rape for other
meanings such as I got raped by that chemistry test today. We learned that you have to be
careful in saying that word because it could be harmful to someone who has really been through
it.
Overall I can say that I learned a lot about Interpersonal Violence, also what to do if
something like that happens on campus. The presentation was great and very informative. I did
not find any of the topics confusing. They were pretty straight forward. This was my first
presentation of this nature. My previous institution(s) did not address the issues in the manor.
