OUTCOMES FROM ALBERTA PROGRAM OF STUDIES

General
Learning
Outcomes:
Specific
Learning
Outcomes:

Describe the characteristics of 3-D and 2-D shapes, and analyze the relationships
among them
Specific Outcome 2: Sort 3-D objects and 2-D shapes using one attribute,
and explain the sorting rule [C, CN, R, V]
This lesson is a review lesson of what we have been looking at all unit with
our 2D shapes and 3D objects. This lesson deals with knowledge that this
outcome doesnt explicitly address. Such as knowing each shape/object and
their attributes so that students had the ability to sort shapes/objects.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
1. Students will be able to recall 2D shapes and 3D objects.
2. Students will be able to identify attributes of previously learned 2D shapes and 3D
objects
3. Students will be able to explain the sorting rule.

ASSESSMENTS
Observations:

Key Questions:

Products/Performan
ces:

Students should be able to use their knowledge that they have gained
throughout this unit to complete the jeopardy game with little to no
guidance.
Students should be able to recall different attributes of 2D shapes and 3D
objects.
Students should be able to recall different 2D shapes and 3D objects
when given a riddle/clue rather than just given a visual representation.
Students should be able to recall different ways of sorting shapes and
objects. Students should be able to sort shapes when given a rule, when
given a pre-assorted set and when given a shape bank.
What shape or object is this?
What are the attributes of the specific shape/object?
How are my shapes sorted?
What is my sorting rule?
How can I sort these shapes?
Students are expected to be able to give answers during the oral review
and during jeopardy with little to no guidance.
Students are expected to be listening and contributing in class discussion.
Students are expected to list the different attributes of each shape and
object.
Students should be able to identify each object and shape that we have
learned thus far.
They should also be able to determine if the thing that I am showing
them is a 2D shape or a 3D object
This is a review class, as students will need to prepare for a summative
task to show what they have learned. This will ensure that all students are
at grade level, or have a strong understanding of the specific outcome.
This lesson should show the knowledge that students have gained rather
than challenging them on new material.

#1

Have jeopardy up on smart board, ready to go.

Have popsicle sticks with students names on them for randomized
choosing.
Introduction
Time
Students will be coming in from recess, have all materials
ready for when students come in. Greet the students at the
door and tell them to quietly sit down in their desk so that we
30
can get ready to learn with math. If student still need a quick
seconds
reminder to hurry and sit down, use the countdown method: 54-3-2-1 Ready Set! You bet!
This whole lesson is a review of what we have been learning
thus far in the unit. In order to get students in the math zone,
ask the students what were the two new 3D objects we learned
yesterday? What were they called? What were some of their
attributes? We also did some sorting with our 3D objects
1-2
yesterday, what are the 3 ways we can sort our 3D objects?
minutes
You also got to play guess my rule, where Miss Benson had to
guess your rule- you all are shape and object masters. We are
going to review all of our shapes and objects we have learned
with Miss Benson.
I expect that all students will be listening quietly and
paying attention to the rules of the game and while
doing our review discussion.
I expect all students to be engaged when playing
jeopardy and that all students are respectful of others.
I expect all students to do their best and try their
hardest.
Daily agenda is on the board at the beginning of the day. This
allows for students to have prior knowledge on what is
expected of them, which allows them to get into the math zone.
I will also have all materials ready, so that my lesson can run as
smoothly as possible.
Now that you can tell me the 2 3D objects that we have learned
yesterday lets see if you can tell me all of the 2D shapes and all
of the 3D shapes we have learned so far with Miss. Benson

Start off with a question: When we see our shapes,
what is that big word we use when we have to describe
them? What do shapes and objects have? (Attributes)
Ensure that students are listening to the discussion and
are contributing.
Have all 6 shapes and 6 objects, at the front of the
classroom.
There are 12 shapes/objects total, which ensures that
each student will get a turn to say something.
When students are asked to name the shape/object also

have them list one attribute that they know about each
shape object.
When the student has given their known attribute, if
there is another attribute that applies to the
shape/object ask the class if they know any other
attributes that belong to this shape.
This lesson starts to get students to think back to the
shapes/objects we have been learning for the past
month and will start to form in their head what they are
When students have gone through all 12 shapes, use
praise to show the students that they did an excellent
job at showing me all that they know about 2D shapes
and 3D objects.
TRANSITION: You all did so well that we are going to do
a review game so that you can show me even more of
your knowledge.
But before we do that lets do some quick
crossovers so that I know you are ready to play
the game. (This also allows for me to get the smart
board set up, and students are not just sitting there)
Brain Break: Lets do some crossovers (30 seconds)
This activity allows for students to show what they have
learned these past few weeks. Students will be assessed
on how well they answered the question (Was it right or
was it wrong?) and if they contribute the correct answer
to class discussion.
This activity allows for students to revisit all of the
knowledge we have gained before being assessed
summative on it.
Students will be formatively assessed on their
participation within the discussion as it links to the next
activity. This lesson is crucial to ensure that students
have received various amounts of ways to learn this new
information.
Review Game: Jeopardy
18
minutes
When students are done their crossovers and sitting
down quietly, ask the students if they have ever played
jeopardy before?
Explain the rules of the game: A students name will be
chosen from these popsicle sticks, that have their
names on it, and they will be able to choose a question.
Students will choose a question that they want to
answer under a specific category and they will have to
answer the question.
If the student gets the question right, the points that
were on the board go to their team.
If the students get it wrong, after the help of 1
classmate, the points go to Miss Benson.
Whoever has the most points at the end of the game
wins.
Ensure that students are confident with the rules. Have
an echo so that I can ensure that students have a
strong understanding of what is expected of them.
Also, remind students that we need to be respectful and
if someone is thinking very hard, are we loud? No, we
wait our turn and if we cant play the game with respect
then we cant play the game anymore. It is our

responsibility grade 1, to show what we know and be
respectful while others are too.
Sponge within the activity: While students are
playing the game, make sure to be watching the
clock, and if there is not enough time after to do
our summative of cut and paste activity then
there are bonus questions for the class to do as a
whole on the jeopardy board.
Students will be formatively assessed on this activity, as I will
see if students are understanding the concepts or not. This
activity is very student centered and rather than just doing a sit
down, review of the objects or them doing a worksheet they are
engaged and are creating a friendly competition. Asking
clarifying questions during the jeopardy game will allow for
students to get clarification right away so that they can be
aware of where they went wrong and can learn from it before
they do the summative assessment task.
Cut and Paste Activity of Sorting
Now that we have looked at all objects and all shapes
we now know a lot about different shapes and objects.
How come I cant call these objects (hold up shapes)?
And how come I cant call these shapes (hold up
objects)?
Have student answer question
I want you to show me the difference between 2D
shapes and 3D objects.
We are going to work through this paper so that you can
show me you know the difference between 2D shapes
8-10
and 3D objects.
minutes
Hand out paper
Have students write their name on it, show me your
name
Go through instructions with class and make sure that
they are clear on what they need to be doing.
Students will need pencil to write their name and
scissors to cut the pictures out, and glue to glue them
onto the paper.
Students will be expected to cut and paste and put the
appropriate shapes and objects into the correct set.
This activity will be handed in for summative assessment so
that I ensure students are meeting the outcome. This activity
will show that students can determine 3D and 2D shapes (I can
tell the difference between 2D shapes and 3D objects)
Closure
Time
Review as a class the 2D shapes and objects one more time so
that students have a very strong understanding of what they
2 minutes
are expected to know. (if time)
It students are able to successfully get through the lesson with
little to no guidance on the actual outcome, the students
clearly have an understanding of what they have learned.
Give praise to the students. Tell the students that they have
been working so hard with all of the shapes and objects. In
order for us to finish up our learning on shapes and objects we
are going to do a craft with shapes and objects.
Tomorrow we will be making a cylinder Santa in math.
Students will not know that it is a cylinder Santa, but I will
inform them that we will be doing something Christmas-y with

our shapes and objects tomorrow.

Sponge
Activity/Activities

Reflections from the

lesson

The sponge activities have been stated throughout the lesson plan. IF there
is not enough time to start the cut and paste, just depending on jeopardy as
I am not sure how the students will do with it as they have never done
something like this before. There is also a sponge stated of bonus
questions that students will do if there is only a few minutes left.
Best lesson yet!!! Math went fantastic- all I can say is WOW! I felt this
lesson went very well with the students. They were engaged and eager to
learn. Jeopardy was a great way for students to show their knowledge. The
variety of instructional strategies kept students interested. I had my time
management down pat. My transitions and pacing went really well. No
concerns. I feel this was one of my best lessons yet and it was great to see
all of the knowledge I have taught them come into action all in one lesson!!
