No Forest? No Future for Us: An Annotated Bibliography
Global Greenhouse Gas Emissions Data. EPA. EPA, 9 Sept. 2015. Web. 02 Oct. 2015.
This source covers the statistics of what is evident in our climate change. This source details the
sources of greenhouse gases and show the percentages through pie charts. It argues that global
greenhouse gases has increased in volume because of various human activities. This article was
meant to inform the public about the levels of greenhouse gas emissions all around the world. By
doing so, they cover the topics of global warming, the greenhouse effect, greenhouse gases,
source of emissions, and climate change.
This source is run by a government agency, the EPA. Short for The Environmental Protection
Agency, the EPA is the government's step towards environment protection and and restoration.
This agency is a collaboration of leading environmental scientist all around the world and is
funded by the United States government. They are partially responsible for establishing and
enforcing environmental laws and regulations. On this particular article, no bias was indicated, as
all they did was display statistics about greenhouse gases and conveyed no other message. Their
claims are a result of a multinational collaboration and intensive research. Compared to my other
sources, this is probably the most thorough and informative source, as it provides actual numbers
and statistics.
I am using this resource because it helps me provide background information; particularly their
statistics on how big of an influence deforestation is on our environment. It helps me show the
reader how big of a problem deforestation is, even if our current rate doesnt increase. This will
provide evidence for my topic as it reiterates my main points in the paper; how big the problem
is, how damaging it is, and how effective it is. I will be using this source as a basis for how big
of a project deforestation is. The way it has influenced how I think about my topic was by
shocking me. Before I did any of this research, I always knew that deforestation was a problem,
but I never knew about how big of a project it was.
Grigoras, Oana. Deforestation Linked to Philippines Disaster. Softpedia. SoftNews, 22
Dec. 2011. Web. 02 Oct. 2015.
In this particular news source, reporters make the connection of over 1,000 deaths and the
disruption of 338,000 lives to deforestation. They argue that those lives would have not been lost
or disturbed if the forests were still there to dissipate the rainfall. The point of this news article
was to inform the public on how deforestation is detrimental to lives and everyday living. By

talking about it, they open of the discussion of: how detrimental forest clearing is, how lives
could have been saved by those trees, and how we can prevent future incidents.
As it is a news article, the evidence is in the story itself. Coverage of the destruction of lives and
of living is the evidence needed to show the public how deforestation can amplify some
incidents. It is a reliable source because it covers something that isnt the first nor last time it
happened. It is just one source covering one case of several hundreds similar in detail, indicating
that the evidence is provided not only in this source nor timeframe. The goal of this source was
to provide others some news and insight of this flooding and causes. The facts publicated by this
source have been brought up thousands of times and through various sources and publications.
Compared to my other sources it isnt as academic nor critical, as it is a news article, conveying
news.
In my paper, I will be using this source to provide evidence of what happens when areas are
cleared out of its forests. I hope that by using this story, I can appeal to emotion by showing how
it causes disasters to worsen and potentially ruins lives. It has affected me by educating me on
the direct effects of deforestation, since I only knew about the indirect results of it.
If Phytoplankton Provides 50% of the Earth's Oxygen What's the Other Half? UCSB Science
Line. The Regents of the University of California, n.d. Web. 02 Oct. 2015.
The main point of this source was to educate the asker about the topic of phytoplankton and
Earths oxygen sources. There isnt really an argument for this website as it was only meant to
educate the asker and public viewers. But in this source, they talk about the phytoplanktons, the
process of photosynthesis, and about the sources of oxygen on Earth.
Although it doesnt indicate where the sources came from, it does seem factual since the same
answers are reiterated. It also seems like a reliable source because it is posted on a University of
California Santa Barbara and National Science Foundation supported website. The goal of this
source was to educate the asker and viewers, and by through education comes the betterment of
society. It is objective and the facts are well documented on a scholarly basis. This source doesnt
provide nearly as much information as any other of my sources do, but it is just as an important
to know as any other evidence.
I provide this source in my paper as background information. It has pieces of information that is
important to iterate since it provides the foundations to a lot of my claims. Without it, it would be
difficult to support half of my claims to the readers. Like how it is important to provide this fact
to my readers, it is for me as well because it helped me develop my argument and my claims.
Without it, I would have no foundation to my paper.
Sharma, Ashutosh. Deforestation Drives Worsening Flooding in Kashmir. Reuters. Thomas
Reuters, 7 July 2015. Web. 07 Oct. 2015.
This particular news sources also argues that deforestation either causes or amplifies natural
disasters. To educate the public by providing up to date news is the main point of this source. It is

another news source that showcases evidence of how detrimental deforestation is. By doing so,
they continue on the topics of: deforestation and its effects, amplification of disasters, and illegal
logging and how it affects us.
As like the previous new source, that legitimacy of this source is in its story. It is another case of
hundreds covered by thousands of news sources and talked about by politicians,
environmentalist, scientists, and even economists. The goal of placing this source in my paper is
to once again reiterate the dangers of deforestation and its effects. This particular source is more
reportive than it is academic or objective, but the facts are well documented and often discussed
in the media. Much like the last news source, it isnt meant to provide further explanation or
background information. It has a place in my paper to provide more evidence for my claims.
Since it is another news article, much like the source about the floods in the Philippines, it helps
me appeal to the emotions of the reader. It advocated the urgency of action, that we must do
something different, or the same disaster can happen to us. It further helps my argument simply
by providing more real life evidence about my claims. Just like the prior news sources, it opened
my eyes to the immediate effects of deforestation and put into perspective of how often these
things happen.
Lindsey, Rebecca. Tropical Deforestation. Earth Observatory. NASA, 30 Mar. 2007. Web.
02 Oct. 2015.
As this source is more of a provider of information, it doesnt have an argument other than the
fact that deforestation happens. It does however talk about the reasons why deforestation does
occur. The point of this article is to educate the populace and perhaps was also made to be used
as a reference. The topics covered here are: cause and effects of deforestation, regional
development, poverty, economics, and living standards.
I find this source to be highly reliable as it is created and supported by NASA, the North
American Space Agency. The goal of this source is to educate the public on the topic of
deforestation through facts and evidence. This compilation of information has an objective
foundation and the facts are well documented throughout the scientific community. Compared to
my other sources, it is one of the more legitimate and extensive sources I have for my paper.
There is a lot of information in this source alone.
This source helps me by providing the bulk of my claims and evidence. Without this, I wouldnt
have much to argue for in my paper. This article with be the source of nearly all the evidence I
need to support my claims. It has taught me a lot as it helps me develop my stand on this issue
and helps me better support my thesis.
Lufumpa, Charles Leyeka. "The PovertyEnvironment Nexus In Africa." African Development
Review 17.3 (2005): 366-381. Academic Search Complete. Web. 2 Oct. 2015.

The argument in this source states that deforestation happens because of the African need for
agriculture and need for immediate necessities since they tend to not have a surplus of any
supplies. The point of this article is to educated readers on the matters of African poverty and
what they do to combat that. Topics include: deforestation, poverty, environment, and
agriculture.
I find this to be a reliable resource, since I found it on a scholarly database and it is a research
article. The goal of this source, seems to be that they want to combat poverty in Africa. This kind
of topic gets plenty of news coverage and is well researched. This source is a scholarly one and is
research based. Compared to my other sources, this is one of the more indirect sources that helps
me with my claims. Indirect because it doesnt talk about my claim. It talks about how poverty
results in many actions, in which includes deforestation.
This source if helpful because it allows me to inform my readers on just exactly why people
deforest their environment. It is helping me shape my argument by providing the other side of the
story, why it is necessary for some people to deforest. That there is an economic and lifestyle
reason to as why deforestation happens, not just for consumer goods. It has tremendously
changed my viewpoint. Before I stumbled upon this article, I saw deforestation is only a bad
thing. Now I understand that some of these things happen because they wont be able to survive
without it. I hope that it brings to light the other side of the story for my readers as well.
Mills Busa, Julianne H. "Deforestation Beyond Borders: Addressing The Disparity Between
Production And Consumption Of Global Resources." Conservation Letters 6.3 (2013):
192-199. Academic Search Complete. Web. 2 Oct. 2015.
This particular source is a scientific letter. The main argument in this paper tells us that current
conservation attempts arent working and that the only way to counter it, is by consuming less.
They also argue that richer countries are just as guilty of deforestation at an unsustainable rate, as
they are often the reasons why poorer countries export vast amounts of wood products. The point
the article is to educate people on the causes and reasons to deforestation. If offers us a solution
on how to combat the aftereffects of deforestation. In this letter, they cover the topics of: the
reasons and causes of deforestation, exportation, poor and rich countries, and they talk about
consumption
This letter was created fairly recently and contains a lot of information that is reiterated in other
sources. The letter itself also has numerous citations to support its claims and was written in a
scholarly basis. It is objective, as it is research and it is supported by many others. The goal of
this source is to educate the public and to input a discussion into the scientific field. Compared to
my other sources, this one is purely scholastic. Meaning that this one is one of the most
legitimate courses anyone can use since it is in itself research. This one is also a lot more
informative in comparison to the others.
This particular source helps me argue mainly of my points. Even though it isnt claiming my
thesis directly, it does compliment mine. It gives much needed detail on the causes and reasons
of deforestation and even inputs a solution. This letter has help shaped my paper by providing the

in depth research I need to put my claim together. Like the other sources, this letter help me put
into a realist view of the world we live in. Where we arent just waiting to be affected by climate
change, but we are in fact in the situation already.
Pidwirny, Michael. Greenhouse Effect. The Encyclopedia of Earth. The Encyclopdeia of Earth,
17 July 2012. Web. 02 Oct. 2015.
The Earths Atmosphere. Astronomy 161: The Solar System. N.p., n.d. Web. 2 Oct.2015.
There arent arguments in this site, as it was made for students to learn about the solar system.
The point of this website was to do just that, educated students and whomever fell upon it on the
subject of Astronomy. The topics covered in this particular web page is about Earth's atmosphere.
I find this source to be reliable as it is a website meant to complement college course lectures.
The goal of this source was to help students better understand the topic of astronomy. It is more
objective as it provides facts that are widely accepted in the scientific world. The facts are well
documented and supported by most. It is an academic source. This source is different from the
others because it is not as informative about my claims as the other sources are.
I use this website to help me put together background information that helps me support my
claims. By doing so, it provides a critical piece of information that a few of my claims can not go
without. This source will go into my paper as background information. This source has put into
perspective and more realist consequences of what happens when we deforest too much.
Zhou, Xun. Deforestation to Blame for Beijings Pollution. Insight & Opinion. South China
Morning Post, 01 Apr. 2013. Web. 02 Oct. 2015
This news article argues that deforestation is the leading cause to pollution in Beijing, China. The
articles point was to educate the public and open the publics eyes to such an issue. They
covered the topics of: deforestation, sandstorms, causes of pollution, and talk about how to deal
with the problem.
As it is a news source, once again the evidence is in the story itself. The news provider is simply
reiterating a phenomenon that isnt unique to their perspective. They are one of thousands of
reporters that share the same story. The goal of this source is to educate the people and bring to
their attention the problem of pollution in China and its causes. This article appears to be more
objective as it is only providing a story and giving a solution. The facts reported in this article is
just one instance of hundreds. Compared to my other sources, it is not as academic nor as
providing.
This source helps me put an image of my claim into my readers mind. Be citing this source, I
am using the actual new coverage as evidence of my claims. This helps me support and verify
my claims. It changed my view on my paper by showing me how severe of a problem
deforestation was and how it does impact us now.
