D1: Evaluate the impact of evolving output mediums on the design and

creation of graphic images

Introduction
In this report, I will be discussing the developments and changes made to Output mediums over the
years and how it has become more and more advanced as well as pleasing to the eye. An Output
device is something that gives out something from the computer for example a computer monitor
because it gives out a picture and allows you to see it. I will also be evaluating the impacts of the
changes and the effects it has on the graphics Industry.
The Output Mediums I will be speaking about are:

Large flat panel screens

Printers
Tablets
Plotters

Printers
Printers have changed immensely over the past years and Modern colour printers
and laser plotters or rapid prototype printers that can produce 3D output are all
evolving output media which have had a positive impact on the graphics industry.
The first ever printer was very slow and large and would frequently make a lot of
loud noise when printing. In the nineteenth century, the production of presses
increased significantly, due to the improvements made to construction and the use
of steam to power the printers; As a result, printing became more affordable and accessible to the
working class. Around that same time the Swiss company Orel Gessner Fssli patents the Aac
process that is used to create photochroms, also called photochrome prints where the colorized
images are produced from black and white photographic negatives via the direct photographic
transfer of a negative onto a lithographic stone. Six to fifteen tint stones, each bearing an
appropriate retouched image, are used to create the color printer.
Many years passed and Printers have continued to improve their quality and their
appearance, making the look more pleasing to the eye. In the 1990s (20th Century), the
first ever digital printer came onto the market it was called Indigo. This colour printer
uses a colour management system that keeps the pictures looking the same wherever
the pages are printed (just like a wireless Printer today). This activated a
transformation within the printing industry, which positively impacted the graphics
world. Ever since the creation of the digital printer, there has been a significant
demand and increase of digital printers.

This screen shows the demand

of the digital printer and growth
compared to Lithography.

creation of graphic images
Likewise, monitors/screen has also evolved and has had a huge impact on the graphics industry as a
whole. When the first monitors came out they were thick, curved and had a glass screen which only
showed things in black and white. There monitors were CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) which was launched
in the 1950s and later the flat panel display was produced. But the flat panel screens were produced
in limited amounts. People saw that screen was are bigger and looked very nice compared to the
CRT monitors, so more flat panel was created to meet the needs of users.
The monitors in this generation are now LCD (Liquid Crystal Display). These monitors are
ensured to have high resolution screens with high mega pixels, so the quality of the
screen is always high. So therefore, monitors making the monitors HD (High Definition)
has allowed people to be able to watch TV or Movies at a very good quality.
More and more people are dependent on these High Definition monitors because films
and movies can be streamed and watched on a PC, so people are more able to depend on using their
computer rather than spending money in the cinema on the latest movies. This makes the need of
more HD/LCD monitors to be created. This therefore has a great impact on the graphic world and
has evolved greatly over the years.

Tablets
Computer Tablets were first created by Microsoft owner Bill Gate in in the late 2000s.
This touch screen mobile computer has massively improved through the years. The first
tablet was run by Windows XP and consisted of pen-computing, which at that time
blow the market by storm. But later Steve Jobs came out with the first generation iPad,
which was a real competitor. This new iPad created by Apple Inc. had a 9.7
touchscreen which had a great impact on the design and creation of graphic images
because it was able take pictures and edit the images to the users liking.
Moreover, tablets have been evolving even more by making users have more control over the
images take and create images. The Graphic Tablet has come a very long way from a simple
one-way writing transmitting machine to a digital art workstation suitable for graphic designers
or any type of artists. The impact of this evolving output medium on the design and creation of
graphic images has been very great for the graphic industry. This is because it has allow users to
easily edit their images they which to create.

Plotter
A plotter is a type of printer that gives hard copies and lines drawings on paper using
one more than one automated pens by reading commands using a PC (this is called
Computer-Aided Design). Plotters are used mainly by the graphic industry due to the
accurate drawings of continuous point-to-point line from the vector graphics files. It was
first introduced by HP in the 1960s HP then introduced paper moving plotters, at the end
of the 1970s, to replace the old flatbed technology.
This made the printers cheaper and smaller in size for more people to buy. The HP
plotters further made a technique of physically moving pens across a carriage causing
the sheet of paper to move the paper back and forth under the pens. This enabled the
device to draw any shape the graphic designer wants, making their work a lot easier.
From then on, Plotter Printers has evolved greatly over years. This output medium, in
my opinion, has impacted massively on the design and creation of graphics images. This
is because of how advance the pictures have become and how easy for people working
within the graphic industry to use.

Conclusion
To conclude, overall I believe that technology has developed massively over the years and will carry
on improving beyond our expectations. In the near future, we will be comfortable in using
technology in our every day life, even for the slightest things. The things you see in futuristic movies,
for example, will one day become reality and be accessible by everyone. In addition to the amount
of information I have researched, I believe that there has overall been a huge difference in
technology from 20 years ago to now. Output mediums have impacted greatly in our lives and I
believe it will continue to do so, making the creation of graphic images extremely easier.
