Lesson Plan Format

Name: [XXXXXX]
Grade Level/Subject Course:
Unit:

Honors Biology

Cells and Cell Transport

Lesson Topic:

Microscope Anatomy and Use

Lesson Length/Time: 120 minutes

Number of Students: 25
Standards/Quality Indicator/Skills
Show-me Standard 3 Characteristics of Living Organisms
Show-Me Performance Goal 1. 4. use technological tools and other resources to locate, select and organize
information
CCSS: ELA/Literacy -WHST.9-12.7 Conduct short research projects to answer a question (or solve a problem;
narrow or broaden the inquiry when appropriate; synthesize multiple sources on the subject, demonstrating
understanding of the subject under investigation.
[School Biology] Learning Standards: 5. The student will know cell organelles and their functions.
Learning Objectives/Goals
1. Students will demonstrate safe use of the compound microscope
2. Students will understand the parts and functions of the compound microscope for examining biological
specimens
LO:
1. Behavioral Outcome: TSW safely remove or return a microscope demonstrating proper handling and storage to
or from the storage cabinets.
2. TSW label the microscope parts on a worksheet and extend microscope use basics to practical scenarios in the
lab procedure.
3. TSW label indicated microscope parts and functions on a quiz sheet with 80 % accuracy.
Assessment (type[s] of assessment used throughout the lesson)
1.
2.
3.
4.

Pre-assess- Show hands who can name the part + fist-of-five comfort with use
Laboratory procedure with questions and diagrams. (DOK 1), formative
Behavioral: Move a microscope from storage to their desk or back with proper handling. (DOK 2), summative
Microscope Anatomy Quiz (next class period) (DOK 1), summative

Lesson Structure and Procedures

A.

Intro- Can you identify this image?

Class Discussion- how do we know what these cells look like?
B.
Notes-Microscope Parts and Function
1.
Pre-assess
2.
Microscope Anatomy using Smart Board Fill-in
3.
Students follow and fill in worksheet on microscope parts
4.
On Smart Board- each student write in one part or function till all parts labeled
C.
Microscope handling and Safety
1.
Each pair will measure and tape a line 6 from the edge of the table.
2.
Student volunteer demo Microscope handling acquisition.
3.
Student volunteer demo Microscope put away.
4.
Practice- one from each group gets scope, other puts it way. Repeat till everyone has done it.

Differentiation/Accommodations/Modifications/Increase in Rigor
Focus Student 1: Small group based on ability pairing. Modification to laboratory- additional specimen
examination and discussion. Further accommodations in Extensions below. Assessment- Increased Rigorinclude a prepared slide examination practical.
Focus Student 2: Small group based on ability pairing. Individual Instruction based on observed need (with small
group), Modified Lecture/Note Taking (using a microscope rather than Smart Board). Assessments: additional
time to complete, only selected responses to questions.
Classroom Management
The teacher will give clear and concise instructions of activities and expectations. The teacher will make sure all
students are following the classroom norms, set at the beginning of the year, the entire class. Small group work
will be monitored for on-task behaviors.
Extensions
Specimen slides for early finishers/advanced students to diagram differences at different power, clock face
analogy for locating features.
Follow-up to Todays Lesson
1.
2.

Microscope Quiz at start of next class.

Handling and safety Q & A, and performed for each subsequent microscopy labs.
