Food and Water Supply for Mandatory 21 Day Quarantinei

Practical Problem: You are quarantined in your own home for 21 days. You are
healthy, but are required to stay out of circulation for this period of time. You must
plan food supplies to have on hand that will last you the length of this time.
Assume that the water is safe to drink. Assume that the electricity and natural gas
are fully functional.
1. Determine Your Basic Food and Water Needs for 21 Day-long
Confinement
Use the information in the appropriate table below to calculate your intake needs.
For this assignment we are considering energy and macronutrients only. [If you are
older, refer to the table listed in the reference below the female intake
recommendations. There is an arrow pointing to the reference.]

Intake
Recommendations
Female (19-30 years)
Water
Energy

This column
displays your
need for a single
day
2.7 L/day
2403 kcal/day

Carbohydrate

130 grams/day

Linoleic Acid (omega-6)

Linolenic Acid (omega3)
Protein

12 grams/day
1.1 grams/day

46 grams/day

Complete this column

to calculate your
needs over 21 days.
2.7L x 21= 56.7 Liters
2403kcal x 21 = 50,463
Kcal
130 grams x 21 = 2730
grams
12 gr x 21 = 252 grams
1.1 gr x 21 = 23.1
grams
46 gr x 21 = 966 grams

These data are from the table, Estimated Energy Requirements (EER), Recommended Dietary Allowances
(RDA) and Adequate Intakes (AI) for Water, Energy, and the Energy Nutrients. This table appears inside
the front cover of our textbook.

2. Develop a Menu and Grocery List (Cost)

a) Develop a menu for one day that meets these basic energy and
macronutrient needs. Use your diet analysis software and your brain to do

this. Assume for the purposes of this assignment that youre best selections
for this confinement will be a combination of canned foods, dry foods, and
shelf-stable packaged foods. Dont include fresh foods; assume they wont
last long enough.

b) Now write a grocery list that provides enough food to this menu for 21 days.
(Remember, this is just a quickie assignment. You can fool around with lots of
different menus, but I am not asking for all that work!) Old fashioned
oatmeal 100% natural/whole grain, two half gallon of almond milk,
apples, oranges, tuna fish, canned chicken breast, mayonnaise,
canned vegetables, two loaf of whole grain bread, peanut butter,
strawberry jam, ham, cheese, and coffee.

3. Estimate Cost of the Foods to last you 21 days. Use an online ordering
systems operated by Harris Teeter, Giant or Whole Foods.

See attachment.
4. Reflections Writing Assignment
Just to think about preparing for a tornado coming around the area is really difficult
to set up my mind and focus in what can be done in the event of being trap in the
house with such disaster. Here I am asked to reflect in the event of being in
mandatory 21 day quarantine, in which it is promised to have electricity and natural
gas working properly as well the water being safe to drink. It is hard to think I must
be isolated at home and get nonperishable food items to survive for this period of
time, since in my daily routine I do not use canned food at all. I like to go to
groceries to touch and feel vegetables and fruits I want to eat, and fresh meat and
chicken I want to buy.
How is this assignment helping me to learn about nutrients I need and about
what I consume? It is helping me in great way, because now I am force to look at
labels to know what kind of nutrients and the amount containing in each package,
and most of all I am aware how labels could be misinterpreted. Even knowing that
eating fresh is better to taste and rich in nutrients I have learn that I can find the
same nutrients in a canned item by choosing it carefully.
Knowing that I will be trapped in the house and limited to certain specific
nutritious items give me anxiety and makes me depressed but at the same time, it
gives me the opportunity to learn different way of surviving without putting my
health in a dangerous.
