ABSTRACT

Intimate partner violence (IPV) which includes physical, sexual, and psychological maltreatment
of one partner against another is a national, social and health problem which is endured by
hundreds of thousands of individuals and families every year in both civilian and military
populations. Unfortunately, the topic of IPV has been asymmetrical with significantly more
attention being paid to male to female IPV rather than female to male IPV despite statistical
research that proves the high rates of female to male IPV.1 Military couples by and large have
greater stress factors than civilian couples which can aggravate incidences of IPV due to the
unique circumstances than service members and families are put through.

A MILITARY- SPECIFIC INTERVENTION SOLUTION
IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE ARMYS FAMILY ADVOCACY PROGRAM
It is the duty of the U.S. Army Family Advocacy Program (FAP) to prevent, assess, investigate,
and treat soldiers and spouses who have been victimized by domestic violence. At a single U.S.
Army installation from 1997 to 2005, domestic violence volunteer victim advocates assisted
1,417 clients in 1,380 physical and 301 verbal abuse incidents with the average soldier and
spouse population during this time was slightly less than 10,000. 2
