Noram coolers for brackish and sea water applications are tailor made
in Noram SX in combination with other alloys as silicon containing
alloys are unsuitable for high chloride containing waters at elevated temperatures. Noram SX is the trademark for the austenitic stainless steel, UNS S32615, which was developed by Sandvik in Sweden specifically for the use in hot concentrated Sulphuric Acid. SX steel is considered the benchmark in sulphuric acid service with over 25 years of unparalleled performance offering numerous advantages over other materials of construction. With Noram SX as the obvious choice on the shell (acid) side an alternative alloy have to be used for the tube side (salt or brackish water). The alloys used in combination with Noram SX have been developed by Sandvik for high chloride applications which is combined with a good corrosion resistance to sulphuric acid. By a careful selection of a high chloride resistant alloy for the tube side and thermal design for safe temperatures on the acid side Noram can supply none anodically protected coolers for all chloride containing waters including sea water. Operation is simple without any electronics to monitor or control. The risk of acid cooler failures resulting from malfunction or operational problems with the electronic passivation system is completely eliminated. Maintenance cost is minimized by eliminating the need for inspection and maintenance of the anodic protection system, as well as for the associated spare parts.
