Anchor Brave - Do you know what this word means?

[possessing or exhibiting courage]
I want you to think about a brave person. Can you think of their
name? What does that person look like? What do they do? Why
do you think they are brave? (Students discuss questions in pairs
and share answers with groups) Anchor questions on board.
Today, we will practice our reading skills. We will improve
the way we read a text, understand the main ideas, and
explain them to others in few words. We will do that as we
read about a brave person who wrote a book. A biography.
Do you know what a biography is?
(Anchor Biography)

The title of the book is I am Malala

(Show the book-cover to students. Place on desk)
Present quotes from reading to students (PPT Slides). Clarify
meaning of words. Discuss meaning of quotes.
In pairs, have students make predictions about the content of the
reading based on the title and the quotes. Each student should
write down one prediction. We will use them later.
Prompt: I think this reading will be about
We will read together as a group, section by section. Stay with
the group. Focus on understanding much and not on finishing
faster than everybody else. Pay attention to the questions on the
screen as you read. Remember, the purpose of the reading is
for you to understand the main ideas and at the end explain
those ideas in few words.
