Taking cues from England, the United States

has had a strong history of helping people
that find themselves homeless. The first
known rescue mission was established in
New York City in 1872, but community
programs were in place
for many years previous
to this time.

At the end of the American Civil War, many people were left
without homes and this started a new counterculture in the
country that was given the name of hobohemia. This
counterculture reached epic proportions during the Great
Depression of the 1930s when many families were no longer
able to afford their homes and
traveled along a migrant worker
trail to where they could find work.
It is thought that over two million
people were homeless at this time
and suffered severely from hunger
and extreme poverty.

Unfortunately, homelessness in the

United States has remained a constant

presence in all of the major cities, with

most locations developing certain areas

where homeless people congregate. In
New York City, this area is called the

Bowery and is comprised of alcoholics,

drug addicts, and other people who are

homeless.

Instead of helping to deal with the homeless program, the

policies that have put into place have made it even more
difficult for a true change in the number of people that have
nowhere to live.

Mission Statement

Our mission is to be of service to the poor and needy. At present, that target is the
homeless of downtown Orlando. However, poor and needy is not isolated to
physical poverty. The greater catastrophe are the spiritual poor and needy; those
who are poor or complacent in their faith and/or those who dont know at all of the
saving grace of Jesus Christ. We seek to represent Christ on our streets and in our city
and show how it is solely by a relationship with him that life can begin changing from
the inside out. ~ Founder, Griffin Campbell
We exist to bring hope to the hopeless, faith to the faithless and encourage life
change from the inside out.

The food share is where our mission began and where the wellspring of all our efforts
begin. In November 2012, we partnered with a start up company in need of a workforce
for home renovations. The SSO Restoration Program was birthed out of this need. Our
program was designed to allow participants to learn a trade, gain an income and become
productive members of society. After 17 months, we decided to suspend the program
because we were unable to provide a safe living atmosphere that would allow participants
the best opportunity for growth. It was an amazing experience and hope we will be able to
revisit the program in the future.

In 2012, 46.5 million

people lived in Poverty
USA. Thats means the
poverty rate for 2012
was 15%.

The 2012 poverty rate was 2.5

percentage points higher than in 2007,
the year before the 2008 recession.

60% of households saw their income

fall in the past year, while those
household earning more than $100,000
are seeing a rise in income.
3.5 million Americans ages 65 and over
are living in poverty.

1 in 5 children in America are living in

poverty.
The U.S. poverty rate is now the third
worst among the developed nations.
Poverty adversely affects the
academic outcomes of children: In
2007, the dropout rate of students
living in low-income families was
about 10 times greater than their
peers from high-income
Households.
