wax or oil resists the color.
Habitat: the place in which an animal lives, survives, and thrives.
Life cycle: the full span of an organisms life from birth to death.
Batik: a traditional textile dying process practiced in many parts of the world using
bright colorful dyes and wax resist technique.
Warm and Cool Color Schemes: combinations of colors which appear warm or cool to
the eye- red, orange, and yellow or green, blue, and purple

Lesson Overview
Day 1: Students will begin the lesson reading a story with Ms. B called Ill Follow the Moon,
a book about the life cycle and ecology of the sea turtle. After discussing the book, students
will view a short PowerPoint presentation with images of sea turtles and sea turtle art from
cultures around the world. For the remainder of the class period, students will practice
drawing sea turtles and sea turtle shells in their sketchbooks with guided help from Ms. B.

Day 2: After a brief review of sea turtle art, students will retrieve their sketchbooks and
finish practicing. Students will watch a demonstration of the project by Ms. B, from
beginning their drawing first with pencil on paper to using black/white oil pastel or gel
medium to create a resist look with watercolor. Students will be sure to write their names
on the back of their paper before beginning the assignment. Student work will be collected
or laid out to dry at the end of the class period.

Day 3: Students will finish the painting process, using a carefully selected set of colors of
their choice. Students will have the opportunity to use salt on wet watercolor if they wish
to create designs and patterns in the paint.
