Divergent Movie Analysis
Divergent is a revolutionary story that centers on Tris Prior and her morals that oppose
the rest of the utopian society she lives in. This society is divided into five factions; each faction
is home to people with similar virtue. Erudite: intelligence, Abnegation: selflessness, Candor:
honesty, Dauntless: bravery, and Amity: peacefulness. These factions are meant to keep order
among the people, although there is always a flaw in the system. In this case, the Divergent are
people that have characteristics of more than one faction, therefore not truly being able to fit into
one specific faction. Being a Divergent, Tris is against this faction system and when she finds out
about Erudites plan to take over the government, she cant help but feel the need to put an end to
it. Tris, along with allies she meets along the way, create a revolution as they do whatever it takes
to bring this issue to light and change the society that they live in.
This movie is an example of a revolution in more ways than one. One being that, it shows
a gender and social status revolution. Instead of keeping to herself and abiding by the rules, Tris
does the opposite and fights for what she believes in. This starts in her Dauntless initiation and
training. Being from Abnegation originally as well as being a girl, no one thought she would ever
top the rest of the Dauntless initiates or go far enough to make it into Dauntless officially. Tris
saw this as a challenge, one that she accepted and made her mission to conquer. She came across
many obstacles as people began to see her as a threat to their performance. Peter tried multiple
times to sabotage, injure, and even kill her when he saw what lengths she would go to in order to

succeed. Through her perseverance she was able to not only qualify for Dauntless, but also finish
at the top of the initiate class, proving everyone wrong. This changed how everyone in Dauntless
viewed girls and Abnegation.
This movie also represents a revolution when Tris, Tobias, and their friends come
together to reveal the intentions of Erudite, and change the way the faction system works forever.
Divergents are people that fit into too many factions, and factionless are people that dont fit into
any. This similarity in terms of being outsiders in the faction system is what brings these two
groups together to rebel against the Erudite. They didnt believe that just because they didnt fit
into the corrupt society, they should be looked down upon, so they rebelled against it. They did
anything and everything to achieve their goals, including going against people of their own
faction. Some of the Dauntless were helping the Erudite gain their power, and Tris didnt hesitate
once to obliterate anything that got in her way.
This revolution changed the characters by revealing an aspect of themselves they didnt
know existed. In the beginning of the movie, Tris was a shy, weak, and outspoken girl that hid
among the others in her selfless faction of Abnegation. Going against traditional beliefs and
leaving her faction to join one with morals that were practically the opposite changed her as a
person, revealing the brave and determined side of her. Tobias started off in the movie as
Dauntless, yet still he had a sense of fear in terms of opening up to others and speaking his mind,
which he hid behind a tough guy image. Meeting Tris changed and inspired him to change this
side of himself as she uncovers the sweet and driven part of him while he helps her bring justice
to the factions.
