The primary condition is a

complete detachment from sin,
including venial sin. Indulgences
are in no way automatic :
mechanically repeating certain
practices in order to acquire them is not enough.
If the fundamental condition of sincere
repentance and a complete detachment from sin
is not met, then the indulgence will not be
plenary but partial. A person wishing to acquire
an indulgence must go to confession ("Individual
and integral" confession is required), take
communion, pray according to the Pope's
intentions and perform the act that the Church
attaches to the indulgence, for example visiting
the Basilicas when there is a Jubilee. In order to
actually acquire the indulgence a person must
be in a state of grace, but this does not
necessarily mean that confession must precede
other conditions. A faithful may first fulfill the act
that is attached to the indulgence (a visit to the
Basilicas, an act of charity, etc.) and then go to
confession. In this case, the indulgence is only
acquired after confession.

The Logo represents the Good Shepherd

who takes upon His shoulder the lost soul
and it has been designed in a way in
which the Good Shepherd touches the
flesh of humanity. One particular feature
worthy of note of that while the Good
Shepherd, in His great mercy, takes
humanity upon Himself, His eyes are
merged with those of man. Christ sees with the eyes of
Adam, and Adam with the eyes of Christ. Every person
discovers in Christ, ones own humanity and the future
that lies ahead. The scene is captured within a shape
called mandorla (almond), a figure to bind progressively
lighter as we move outward, suggest the movement of
Christ who carries humanity out of the night of sin and
death. Conversely, the depth of the darker color suggests
the impenetrability of the love of the Father who forgives
all .

LOOKING IN THE RIGHT PLACES
Appearances can be deceiving, as the saying goes. As
we celebrate the epiphania, the appearing of the eternal
Word of God on earth, this is still true. What rapturous
foresight must have filled Isaiah as he wrote the words
we hear today. How, for four hundred years, they must
have filled the hearts of the people of Israel with hope for
the day when Gods glory would shine on them. How
deceived some must have felt when the glory of God
came to them in the lowliest and humblest of human
lives. We have many expectations about how the divine
presence will appear among us. But we can also set
ourselves up, through these expectations, to miss the
divine glory when it truly appears. We get caught up in
looking for the star, forgetting that the star is not the
divine sign, the babe is. It may take a persistent journey
for us to come upon the true appearance of Gods glory
in our lives: Jesus Christ.

Did you know...

Here at Holy Spirit we have
people trained to give
emotional and
spiritual support to those
going through a difficult
time in their life. Stephen
Ministers are a friend who gives you a shoulder to lean on
if you have lost a loved one, you or a loved one have a
serious illness, going through marital or family
difficulties or any other issue causing distress. However,
we need more ministers, we are a large parish and
people with many needs. We are starting another
training class on February 3, 2016. The only prerequisite
is a loving, compassionate heart. This ministry goes both
ways, it provides many blessings for those receiving
support as well as those giving it.
For more info Call Hazel 299-3279 or Paul 706-1677.

Stewardship Reflection
The prophet Isaiah perhaps more than any other of
the prophets anticipated the coming of Christ. He
foresaw details about the coming of the Messiah
which are uncanny in their accuracy. It is almost as
if Isaiah foresaw the glory of Christs Epiphany.
Rise up in splendorYour light has comeThen
shall you be radiant at what you see. The light of
Christ has shone and is shining upon us. However,
we are to do more than just bask in it. We are to be
radiant at what we see. This is the call to
stewardship; we are to take that light, that Good
News, and we are to share it and spread it. Biblical
scholars are of the opinion that St. Paul wrote his
letter to the Ephesians (from which our Second
Reading is drawn) during a time when he was under
house arrest in Rome. Note that he was not in prison.
At that time house arrest meant you could move
easily around your house during the day under the
watchful eyes of soldiers, but could not leave. At
night you were chained to a soldier who slept next to
you. Paul speaks of being a steward of Gods grace.
You might say he realizes that he is not a prisoner of
the Romans, but a prisoner of the Lord. He has felt
and realized the light of Christ referenced by Isaiah,
and he has spent his apostolic life as a disciple, as
one who has indeed been a steward and shared the
glory he has realized.

Centering
Prayer
New Year
Retreat
Would you like to start the New Year by deepening
your prayer life and nurturing your relationship of
intimacy with God? Centering Prayer is a
time-honored prayer practice in the Christian tradition
that has helped Christians to prepare for the gift of
Contemplative Prayer.
Whether your interest is deepening your
relationship with God, relief from the stress of daily
life, or learning about Contemplative Prayer, why not
take some time at the beginning of this New Year, to
learn and practice Centering Prayer? An introductory
retreat offers instruction and practice on the method of
Centering Prayer and discussion about its conceptual
background. We will learn from skilled retreat
facilitators, insightful DVD's and small group
discussion. There will be plenty of time to rest and
enjoy the beautiful retreat center. This workshop
refreshes the spirit and deepens our commitment to a
regular Centering Prayer practice. Save by registering
early through Jan 18th. Shared Room: $225. Private
Room: $267. Includes 2 nights lodging and 6
delicious meals. $30 late registration fee after Jan
18th. Retreat begins Friday at 6 p.m. and

developed and combined with additional tools to explore
other areas of the marriage relationship. For confidential

Think about it
Go and search diligently for the child.
The encounter with Jesus Christ is neverending. It is a daily occurrence. To search
diligently means to look for carefully,
inspecting every nook and cranny.
Search diligently for Jesus in every aspect
of your life. How is He present in your
family, your friendships, your school,
your work,
your worries, joys, and fears?
Each of the three kings had a gift to bring
to the Lord, and each gift was unique:

gold, frankincense and myrrh. All of us,

by way of our Baptism, are kings. Also,
every teen has a unique gift no one else
possesses that can be placed at the service
of Christ and His Church.
After meeting Christ, the three kings
departed for their country by another
way. No one ever encounters Jesus and
leaves as they came. He always changes
us. Have you truly encountered Christ in
your life? If not, do not fear. You will
encounter Him if you open the stable
of your heart and invite Him to take up
residence there. Do so, and you will be
changed forever.
VOCATIONS CORNER
Practical Steps to Discern Vocation
1. Receive the Sacraments
Go to confession regularly, like once a
month or more. Prepare yourself ahead
of time and receive Christ in the Eucharist
at least weekly. Participating in daily
Mass is great if your schedule allows it.
Holy Communion is the shortest and safest
way to heaven.
St. Pius X
The confession of evil works is the first
beginning of good works. St. Augustine
2. Pray!
Spend time with the Lord! Go to
Eucharistic Adoration whenever you can,
and ask Him what He wants you to do.
Prayer is the foundation of the spiritual
edifice. Prayer is all powerful.
St. Josemaria Escriva
3. Live the Life
You wont have a good relationship with
God if youre not trying to live His
commands. Life a good CatholicChristian life to the best of your ability.
When Blessed John the Evangelist was so
old that he had to be carried to Church by the
disciples, and was not able to speak much, he
used to say nothing other than: Little
children, love one another.
St. Jerome
Love God, serve God; everything is in that.
St. Clare of Assisi
4. Read
Read and meditate on the Scriptures,
spiritual classics, the lives of the saints
You will not see anyone who is truly

striving after his advancement who is not

given to spiritual reading. And as to him who
neglects it, the fact will soon be observed by
his progress.
St. Athanasius
Ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of
Christ.
St. Jerome
5. Get Help
The Christian journey is not meant to be
travelled alone. Talk to your confessor,
spiritual director, a priest or religious, a
person who is a friend of God.
Go to your confessor; open your heart to
him; display to him all the recesses of your
soul; take the advice that he will give you with
the utmost humility and simplicity. For God,
Who has an infinite love for obedience,
frequently renders profitable the counsels we
take from others, bust especially from those
who are the guides of our souls.
St. Francis de Sales
Above all remember that the good Lord
loves you and wants you to be
happy. He made you and knows what
will make you happy better than you
do. He loves your loved ones more than
you do and wants their happiness as
well. He is all powerful and all-knowing
and so His plans for you are not only for
your good but also for the good of
everyone else. SO TRUST HIM!
Do not be afraid of Christ! He takes nothing
away and He gives you everything. When we
give ourselves to Him, we receive a hundred
-fold in return. Yes, open, open wide the
doors to Christ - and you will find true life.
Pope Benedict XVI
Few souls understand what God would
accomplish in them if they were to abandon
themselves unreservedly to Him and if they
were to allow His grace to mold them
accordingly.
St. Ignatius Loyola
If you are what you should be, then you will
set the world on fire.
St. Catherine of Siena
