CourseAims:
Theprimarygoalistoimprovethestudentsunderstandingofthetechnicalvocabularyusedin
thebiologicalsciences.Studentswilldevelopskillsinseparatingwordsintotheir
components
throughthememorizationofGreekandLatin
prefixes,suffixesandbases
.Bytheendofthe
quarterstudentswillhaveexpandedbothtechnicalandnontechnicalvocabularyandwillbeat
easewhenreadinghighlyspecificorraremedicalorscientificterminology.Noprevious
knowledgeofLatinorGreekisrequired.

CourseConduct:
Outofcourtesytoyourclassmatesandtome,pleasecometoclass
ontime
andpreparedto
contribute
fortheentireclassperiod,bothpassivelybybeingattentiveandlisteningand
activelybyaskingquestionsorparticipatingingroupactivities.Cellphonesandothersuch
electronicsmustbesilent/off.Universityconductand
scholarlyintegrity
codesshouldbe
followedatalltimes.

Ifabsenceisunavoidableduetoillnessorotherlegitimatecircumstances(e.g.family
emergency),youmustcontactmeviaemailtoletmeknowbeforeclass.Ifyouareabsent,itis
yourresponsibilitytofindoutwhatyoumissedinclass,catchuponanymissedhomework,

explanationsorhelpwithaspecificconcept.

Grading:
Becausethisclassissovocabularyheavy,therewillbe
weeklyquizzes
onFridaysconsistingof
vocabularyitemsfromtheweeksreading.Thepointofthesequizzesisnottooverloadthe
studentswithanunbearableamountofwork,buttoprovidea
consistent
and
steady
wayto
practicenewvocabulary.Wearelearningthe
language
ofscienceandmedicineand,aswith
anyforeignlanguage,
repetitionisveryimportant
.Thesequizzeswillbe
gradedfor
completion
andgoneoveronthenextMondaymorning.Exceptforexcusedabsences,
there
willbenomakeupquizzes
