SELF-HELP GROUPS

INTRODUCTION
• Initiated by Professor Mohammad Yunus
from Grameen Bank, Bangladesh
• Major form of microfinance- Self Help
Groups.
• Focus on rural women
• Primarily involved in savings and credit
activities.
THE WORKING
• Small Scale financial services.
• Credit provided to group of individuals
and village organisations that provide
joint liability.
• An unregistered group of 10-20 members
• Linkages with NABARD
ADVANTAGES
• Reduction in delinquency rates-over 95%
repayment rate
• By 2003, over 700,000 groups had
obtained over Rs.20 billion (US$425
million) in loans from banks benefiting
more than 10 million people
• Savings in these groups is estimated to be
at least Rs.8 billion (US$170 million)
CONCLUSION
Micro-credit
programs and
institutions have
generated a major
and positive change
in the incomes of the
rural poor.
