1 . DELIVERY
Before leaving the factory, each plate heat exchanger from Arsopi, is tested in compliance with
the specifications of the test. Only after total compliance of inspection and testing, can the quality
department give authorisation for despatch. The exchangers are delivered completely
assembled, unless otherwise stated. Depending on the specifications of the contract, the
exchanger may be packed or not.
Packaging available:
x Cardboard box
x Sea packaging
You must always use equipment whose capacity is superior to that of the weight of
the exchanger.
The exchanger should always be moved with care and wherever possible in the upright
position (the normal position).

2 . INSTALLATION
The exchanger is installed after delivery.
The space required for installation at its destination should correspond to (fig. 2.1.)

In this way, enough clearance around the exchanger facilitates access and
necessary maintenance tasks to be undertaken. The values given in (fig 2.1.) are
recommended by ARSOPI-THERMAL. Should there be a problem of limited

solution.

The fixing of the exchanger to the ground, must be done only after the intended site of the
exchanger has been levelled.
ARSOPI-THERMAL recommends that models of a greater dimension should be fixed in place by
means of steel bolts, previously inserted before the concrete foundations. Models of a lesser
dimension, should be fixed in place with a steel plug after the concrete foundations have been laid.

After the exchanger has been fixed to the ground, it must be connected to the pipes in
compliance with the drawing of location of inlet / outlet.
The following points must be taken into account when turning on the exchanger:
Make sure that the dimension A maximum is in accordance with the name plate.
Make sure that none force moment or vibration are acting upon the connections.
Make sure that the pipe system connected to the exchanger is secured against
sudden pressure surges or temperature fluctuations by the use of shut off valves,
safety valves and vent valves.
Make sure, LQWKHFDVHRIFRQQHFWLRQVPDGHXSRQWKHPRYDEOHSUHVVXUHSODWH(
or on the connection plate, that the pipe is applied in such a way as to enable it to
be opened easily. It is advisable, due to the above reason and the fact that the
pressure of the plates are variable, to use piping with flexible connections.
(see fig. 2.4.).
Please ensure that during the welding of the connection tubing to the heat
exchanger no physical contact occurs between the heat exchanger and the tubing,
to avoid damage to the heat exchanger plates.

In the case of lined inlets and outlets, prepared to receive flanges with stud bolts, it is
necessary to proceed in compliance with fig. 9.5. Note that in the case of rubber lining, there is no
need for a gasket as the flange comes into direct contact with the lining.

7 . REPLACING GASKETS
As already stated in (chap. 12.2), there are two types of gaskets: fixed with adhesive or slit-in.
GASKETS FIXED WITH ADHESIVE - STEPS TO FOLLOW
1. Remove the old plate gasket by hand. If the gasket still remains intact, gently heat on the
reverse side with a low flame.
2. Remove adhesive residues in the groove using a non corrosive solution (e.g.: acetone).
3. Clean any further residue and dry the gasket groove.
4. Apply a thin layer of adhesive uniformly along the periphery of the plate, using a fine brush
or manual injection gun.
5. Insert the gasket in the groove and ensure that it is correctly positioned (see fig. 7.1).
6. Stack the plates, making sure that they are done so correctly and apply pressure evenly by
means of some considerable weight for approx. 12 hours at room temperature.
For gaskets EDPM, the minimum recommended time is 24 hours.

ARSOPI-THERMAL
The adhesive does not serve as a ring gasket. Its sole purpose is to fix the gasket
to the periphery of the plate.
Make sure that the workplace is sufficiently ventilated and that there are no naked
flames.
2.
3.
Insert the gasket into the groove and check that it correctly positioned with the fixing brim,
in the respective plate contour (see fig. 7.1).

The plates can be prepared either for gaskets fixed with adhesive or without adhesive, which we
call slit-in type.
The material used for the gaskets is determined by temperature conditions, pressure and
compatibility with the fluids.
The most common materials used are:
- Stainless steels
- Titanium and its alloys
- Nickel and its alloys.
Inside each plate model, there may be several types of plates with differing groove geometry.
Also, there are plates with hangers or without. (see figures 12.1.3 e 12.1.4)
The figure 12.1.5. illustrates these possibilities.

12.2 GASKETS
These are situated on the peripheral groove of the plate and have the double effect of ensuring
stoppage and avoiding fluids mixing.
All gaskets are designed to ensure that both fluids at the transfer ports are kept separate from
each other by means of a double-gasket guidance system. In the event of any leakage in this
area the leakage chamber has the duty of outwardly discharging the liquid via gaps in the
sealing webs (leakage grooves) so that any leakage is immediately apparent. (see fig. 12.2.2)
The gasket are wearing parts. Each gasket has its own inner resilience. This resilience is
affected by temperature, pressure and pressing force. Inadmissible temperatures and
pressures may reduce this resilience and cause the gaskets to harden.
There are two types of gaskets: Fixed with adhesive and slit-in (without adhesive).
The former are fixed to the plate by an adhesive.
The latter are held in place by constrictions in the gasket groove.
The gaskets are available in various materials. The choice of the material always takes into
account temperature conditions, pressure, compatibility with the fluids and type of application
whether hygienic (FDA gaskets) or industrial.

ARSOPI-THERMAL
The exchanger is always supplied, when new, with the dimension A maximum, or rather with the
minimum compression.
Due to the functioning of the exchanger, the gaskets will be subject to wear and this will
consequently result in a reduction of density, which in turn will imply a gradual adjustment of
dimension A .

UNIFORM TIGHTENING:
You must tighten
according to the sequence
indicated on the figure, and
continue doing so until the
intended dimension has
been reached.
If the exchanger has not been tightened to the dimension A minimum (maximum tightening), you
may continue to do so as long as it's needed. You must not tighten unnecessarily as this may
damage the durability of the gaskets. The exchanger should only be tightened in the case of
gasket leakages or partial change of gaskets (though not advisable).
When the dimension A minimum is achieved, or rather, the maximum tightening, the whole set of
gaskets should be replaced.
Ring spanners or manual ratchets are used for the above foresaid purpose. For models of greater
dimension and frequent disassembling of plates, pneumatic tools are recommended.
Do not force the tightening of the plate pack when the gaskets are in new condition
in order not to cause damage on the plates/gaskets.
Never exceed the value of dimension A minimum as this will imply a deformation of
the heat exchange plates.
The exchanger must be tightened uniformly (see attachment to fig. 13.1.) to ensure

Every time you open or close the heat exchanger, you must use the correct
lubricant in the threaded parts.

The standard external forces, due to the piping, have been taken
into account with the calculation established with the safety factor
adjusted to the pressure limit.
Make the piping in a way that the current forces do not exceed the
standard calculations.
See the mechanical calculation for the permitted standard forces.

16 . SPARE PARTS
For 2-Year operational spare parts information, please read your Plate Heat Exchanger Instruction
manual.
For exchangers supplied up to November 2008, the spare part list gathers all the information like
code, description and recommended quantities.
For exchangers supplied after November 2009, the Plate Heat Exchanger General Arrangement
drawing has all the necessary information with regards to the recommended spare with codes and
description, as well as detailed information on the plates for easy identification and ordering.
Premises must be cool, dry and dustfree and only moderate ventilated. Besides it must be rather
dark and protected from sunlight. Room temperature about +20 C.
