East( Asian( Medicine( (EAM),( sometimes( known( as( Oriental( Medicine( or( Chinese(
Medicine,(describes(a(family(of(medical(systems(which(all(have(their(origins(in(the(
traditional( medicine( of( China.( ( EAM( has( a( unique( core( theory( and( clinical(
applications(that(have(wide(application(for(the(management(of(disease.(((The(earliest(
methods(of(treatment(that(fall(under(the(heading(of(EAM(include(for(example(herbal(
medicines,(moxibustion((heat(therapy),(and(manual(therapies((i.e.,(various(types(of(
massage(and(bodywork).((Later,(around(the(time(of(the(Han(dynasty((206(BCE((220(
CE),(acupuncture(therapy(with(fine(needles(was(developed.(

)( is( the( use( of( manual( stimulation( of( specific( points( or(

zones(of(the(body(used(in(acupuncture(therapy,(without(the(use(of(needles.((It(works(
on(the(same(general(theory(as(acupuncture(and(other(EAM(therapies,(although(basic(
acupressure( is( easy( to( learn( and( apply( as( a( type( of( home( therapy.( ( In( China(
acupressure( is( a( part( of( a( larger( approach( to( remedial( bodywork( therapy( and(
manipulation(called(Tuina(

The(study(of(medicine(and(martial(arts(were(linked(closely(in(ancient(China.((In(an(
era(where(medical(care(was(scarce(martial(artists(and(martial(arts(teachers(needed(
to(know(at(the(very(least(the(rudiments(of(first(aid(when(faced(by(traumatic(injuries.((
Furthermore,( knowledge( of( anatomy( was( an( asset( in( fighting( so( as( to( better(
understand(the(vulnerabilities(of(the(human(form.((The(basic(study(of(medicine(was(
thus( considered( part( of( the( standard( curriculum( for( serious( martial( artists.( ( Some(
martial(artists,(because(of(their(familiarity(with(traumatic(injury,(made(their(livings(

also( as( physicians( who( practiced( orthopedics( or( traumatology( ( the( specialty(
commonly(known(in(Chinese(as(Die(Da.(

Eventually(more(specific(medical(knowledge(was(integrated(into(martial(practice(so(
as( to( make( it( easier( to( injure( or( subdue( an( opponent.( ( Based( on( a( detailed(
understanding(of(the(physical(and(energetic(body,(martial(artists(began(developing(
specialized( techniques( such( as( Fen( Jin( (dividing( or( grabbing( the( muscles( and(
tendons),(Cu(Gu(((misplacing(or(dislocating(bones(and(joints),(bone(breaking,(Bi(
Qi( ( (sealing( off( the( breath( causing( an( opponent( to( loose( consciousness),( Dian(
Xue( ( (striking( veins( and( arteries),( and( Dian( Xue( ( (different( from( the(
previous( Dian( Xue)( or( Dian( Mai( ( (striking( acupuncture( points,( known( as( Dim(
Mak(in(Cantonese).(

Acupressure(is(closely(related(to(Dian(Xue((striking(acupuncture(points),(except(in(
acupressure( the( intention( is( to( use( points( to( treat( or( prevent( disease( rather( than(
cause(injury.((Basic(acupressure(is(easy(to(learn,(easy(to(apply,(and(effective.((Thus(it(
is( an( ideal( way( for( martial( artists( to( start( reincorporating( traditional( medical(
knowledge(into(their(own(martial(arts(practice(regimens.(

Qi!and!The!Channel!System!
(
Qi( is( a( core( concept( in( EAM( that( also( permeates( all( of( Asian( culture.( ( It( is(
sometimes(translated(as(energy(or(described(as(a(bio`electric(force,(although(this(
is(a(simple(glossing(of(a(very(complicated(concept.((Qi(is(hard(to(define(precisely,(but(
it( can( be( thought( of( as( the( most( essential( vital( substance( in( the( body,( the( normal(
functions( of( the( different( organ( systems( in( the( body,( and( even( the( relationship(
between(the(organ(functions(internally.((All(of(this(is(Qi.(

Qi( and( blood( are( said( to( move( through( the( body( in( a( system( of( interconnected(
networks( known( as( the( channels( and( network( vessels( .( ( The( channels( are(
drawn(as(lines(on(the(surface(of(the(body,(although(in(actuality(they(move(between(
and( connect( the( internal( organs( with( each( other( and( with( the( surface( areas( of( the(
body.( ( Broadly( speaking( disease( is( a( breakdown( in( the( normal( harmonious(
relationships( between( different( parts( of( the( body,( or( the( normal( functions( of( the(
body.( ( Since( the( channel( system( represents( the( normal( harmonious( relationships(
and( functions( of( Qi( in( the( body,( disease( is( just( a( manifestation( of( some( sort( of(
imbalance(present(in(the(channel(system.(

In(EAM(there(are(several(channel(systems(in(the(body,(although(the(most(commonly(
used( are( known( as( the( Primary( Channels.( ( There( are( 12( primary( channels,( each(
named(for(the(main(internal(organ(to(which(they(pertain.((Only(the(primary(channels(
and(two(extra(vessels((the(Du(Mai(on(the(midline(of(the(back,(and(the(Ren(Mai(on(the(
midline(of(the(front)(have(their(own(acupuncture(points.((All(other(channels(in(the(
body( share( the( borrow( points( from( the( primary( channels,( and( thus,( the( primary(
channels(are(the(main(area(of(study(in(EAM(and(the(main(areas(where(treatment(is(
applied.(

Acupuncture( points,( the( same( as( acupressure( points,( are( areas( on( the( channels(
where( the( Qi( mechanism( can( be( effectively( regulated( with( the( purpose( of(
reestablishing( normal( function( and( movement( of( the( Qi,( and( normal( relationships(
between(the(surface(and(the(interior,(or(between(the(internal(organs.((Points(can(be(
stimulated( with( needles,( magnets,( heat,( or( just( simple( pressure.( ( The( method( of(
locating(points(will(be(described(below.(

One( of( the( most( common( problems( that( martial( artists( will( have( to( deal( with( is(
injury( and( pain,( and( therefore( it( is( helpful( to( understand( pain( from( a( Chinese(
medical(perspective.((Simply(speaking,(pain(is(a(state(of(stagnation,(or(non`freeflow(
movement(of(the(Qi(and(blood(in(a(given(area(of(the(body.((There(is(a(famous(saying(
in(Chinese(that(says(when(there(is(no(free(movement,(pain(results((bu$tong$ze$tong$
).((The(treatment(for(pain(then(is(simple.((Reestablish(movement(and(pain(
disappears( (tong$ze$bu$tong$

).( ( Acupressure( and( basic( massage( moves( Qi(

and(blood(in(the(channels(and(thus(effectively(treats(pain.(

Stagnation(that(results(in(pain(can(come(from(many(causes,(although(probably(the(
most(common(cause(for(the(martial(artist(is(traumatic(injury.((The(typical(example(of(
this(phenomenon(of(course(is(traumatic(injury(that(causes(bruising.((When(an(area(is(
hit,(blood(vessels(break.((The(leaking(blood(and(other(factors(cause(local(swelling(in(
the(area.((Both(fluids(and(blood(are(not(moving,(and(the(resulting(swelling(leads(to(
pain.(

Other( conditions( can( also( lead( to( stagnation( and( pain,( which( are( described( in(
Chinese(as(common(sayings(similar(to(the(one(mentioned(above.((The(first(is(bu$rong$

vitality(is(weak(there(can(be(a(state(where(there(is(inadequate(strength(to(propel(the(

In(EAM(terms,(as(vitality(diminishes(there(is(inadequate(nourishment(in(the(joints,(

Acupressure(points(are(located(along(channels.((There(are(basically(two(methods(of(
locating( points:( (1)( in( relationship( to( identifiable( anatomical$landmarks,( or( (2)( by(
determining(proportional$distance(between(parts(of(the(body.((
(
Anatomical$landmarks(refer(to(parts(of(the(body(that(can(be(seen(or(felt(by(hand.((A(
simple( anatomical( landmark( might( be( the( tip( of( the( nose( or( the( corner( of( the( eye.((
These( are( examples( that( anyone( even( without( specific( anatomical( knowledge( can(
find.( ( Other( anatomical( landmarks( are( for( example,( the( ends( of( bones( or( the(
locations( where( tendons( attach( to( bones.( ( These( require( some( basic( training( in(
human( anatomy( although( are( still( easy( to( learn( and( understand.( ( Anatomical(
landmarks(are(basically(just(landmarks(as(in(when(finding(a(building(while(driving.((
For(example,(when(driving(instructions(may(say(take(a(left(at(the(third(traffic(light.((
The(traffic(light(in(this(case(is(the(landmark.((In(point(location,(the(instructions(may(
say(that(a(point(is(located(at(the(tip(of(the(ear.((In(this(case(the(ear(is(the(landmark.(

Proportional$ distance( is( the( other( method( of( locating( points,( and( it( refers( to( the(
distance(between(two(known(anatomical(landmarks,(or(measured(distances(from(a(
single(anatomical(landmark.((This(distance(is(measured(in(cun(,(sometimes(called(

anatomical( inches.( ( The( length( of( a( cun( is( different( for( every( person,( based( on( the(
size(of(their(own(body.((EAM(defines(the(distance(of(a(cun(as(the(width(of(the(thumb(
at(the(interphalangeal(joint((the(joint(in(the(middle(of(the(thumb).((The(width(of(the(
four(fingers,(without(the(thumb,(is(three$cun.((For(example,(if(a(point(is(located(three(

Alternately,( the( precise( location( of( the( point( can( be( determined( by( pressure(

In(acupressure(or(Tuina,(points(are(mechanically(stimulated(with(pressure,(mainly(
using(the(fingers(or(hands,(although(other(parts(of(the(body(such(as(the(elbows(or(
feet( can( be( used.( ( This( pressure( activates( the( points( functions( and( stimulates(
movement( in( the( channel( the( point( is( on.( ( Other( methods( of( stimulation( can( be(

Below( are( the( most( commonly( used( manipulations( in( Tuina,( Chinese( remedial(
bodywork( therapy.( ( All( of( these( methods( can( be( used( to( stimulate( acupressure(
points,(although(some(are(more(commonly(used(than(others.(

Pushing(is(executed(by(pushing/sliding(along(various(muscles(of(the(body.((To(push,(
the(therapist(can(use(one(or(more(fingers,(the(palm,(the(thenar(eminence,(the(fist,(or(
knuckles.((This(technique(is(often(performed(with(oil,(herbal(liniment(or(some(other(
skin(lubricant.((This(technique(relaxes(muscles,(and(moves(and(quickens(the(Qi(and(
