DoDEA College and Career Ready Standards for Mathematics

DoDEAs implementation of the College and Career Ready Standards for Mathematics (CCRSM)
begins SY2015-16. These standards allow DoDEA to focus on teaching our mobile militaryconnected students and are the pathway to prepare young people to compete and succeed in a
global economy. CCRSM require a significant shift in instructional practice as well as new
approaches by teachers to help students master more critical thinking and problem solving skills.
The following task illustrates the type of math students will be doing as part of the new standards.

Grade 2
Domain - Operations and Algebraic Thinking
Cluster Represent and solve problems involving addition and subtraction.
Standard 2.OA.1 Use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve one- and two-step word
problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and
comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol
for the unknown number to represent the problem.

Task
A pencil costs 59 cents, and a sticker costs 20 cents less. How much do a pencil and a sticker
cost together?
