Electra Complex Within Fight Club

Except for their humping Tyler and Marla were never in the same
room, my parents pulled this same act for years.
The Narrator, while commonly linked to suffering from the
Oedipus complex, is a sufferer of Karl Jungs Electra complex and
despises Marla for driving a wedge between him and Tyler. It is only
later on in the movie when the narrator becomes aware of his second
persona (Tyler) that he moves to show any form of attraction to
Marla. This can be considered to be a reaction to his return to his
Ikea world as he attempts to re-conform to societys norms. This
dislike for Marla is evident at the start when she begins to appear at
his groups, however he loses it with her after she appears at the all
male testicular cancer group. This is an environment where he does
not have to compete with a female for male attention therefor her
introduction in to the group leads to the outburst of jealousy and
anger. However when he engages with her he doesnt use an
aggressive tone but a confident one before turning to a more
submissive tone as she respond confidently
There is also evidence for his father infatuation in his
attachment to Bob, a character who is male but can also fulfill the
nurturing need he requires as a result of his hormonally grown bitch
tits but his history as a body builder shows he is also physically
able to provide protection. His use of the word Bitch rather than
women is in its self is a strong indication of his attitude towards
women due to his use of aggressive and demining terminology. Bob
is also shown to be emotionally open towards the Narrator; while
this also shows how Bob represents a male who has the capability to
nurture it also is a parallel towards the narrators own father (if we
can assume that Tylers claims on his father are reflective of the
narrators) then we can assume that the narrators father was
emotionally absent (as Tylers, an emotional being, was physically
missing) therefore Bobs emotional presents means he is not a true
father representation. This may explain why the narrator is drawn
towards Tyler a more emotionally absent father figure who also
fulfills a prophecy of abandoning the narrator. The narrators
description of Bobs Bitch tits as the way you think of Gods as
big is also telling of his drawing towards Bob due to Bob being a
physical representation of what the narrator thinks he desires (a
nurturing male) however Bob is a result of a physical condition and a
disease (testicular cancer) making him a false idol. This
disappointment in the reality of Bob and a sort lose of faith in his
desires that allows him to become susceptible to the charismatic
Tyler (In a similar way to which Manson frequently took in church
goers who had lost faith).

Bob can also be seen a representation of what the Narrators

fear he will become if he was to recognize his problems,
emasculated, abandoned and a pariah. This explain why the
Narrator is later kind to Bob, rather than being kind to Bob for Bobs
sake he is doing so for his own reasoning, he is hoping that due to
him showing understanding for Bob the universe will reward him
by having someone understand him when he recognizes his
problems.
