Wheeler High School 10th Lit/Comp Syllabus

Spring 2016
Dr. James E. Carter
This is a thematic-based course which will ask students to demonstrate
a comprehensive understanding of the structural elements and critical
evaluation of literature from different authors and genres, apply knowledge of
literary terms to various works, and show knowledge of strategies used to
enhance understanding across subject areas. Our class will also expect
students to show in-depth knowledge of research techniques and
interpretations of messages and effects of mass media. We will also work on
mastering the writing process, including the usage and mechanics of
Standard American English.

I use the point system; we will top out at about 3000 points at the end
of the semester. Every assignment will receive a grade. A basic homework
assignment is worth 1 point extra credit on the unit test if (a) it was done
outside of class and (b) it makes it to class in print on the day assigned. I
dont accept late homework.
Quizzes will be worth 1 point per question; tests will be worth 2. Formal
compositions are worth 100 points. Students may turn them in late at a
penalty of 10% per day as per English Department policy.
Classroom Expectations
No food or drinks are allowed in the classroom. Water Only!
Tardy students must have a pass to enter the classroom.
One student at a time will be allowed to leave the class for the
restroom during class time. Students should be considerate of other
students needs when out of the room.
Cell phones should be turned off and face down on the desktop during
class. If there is an emergency at home, parents are to call the school
and the school will get in contact with the student. Unauthorized use
of cell phones in class is a disciplinary offense

Guidelines regarding make-up work are detailed in the student

handbook.

Miscellaneous
The best way to keep up with current averages, missing assignments,
attendance, etc. is through the parent program on SYNERGY. Parents can set
up an account through the guidance office. It is highly recommended that
each student have an account, so there is no confusion or misunderstanding
regarding grades. Since the SYNERGY program is accessible to each student
and parent, calls will rarely be made home to inform parents about grades.
I have read this course syllabus and understand the student is
responsible for knowing the information and following all of the
course rules and regulations.
Please have this syllabus signed by the student and the parent and
returned to the teacher as soon as possible.
