EXPERIENCE

Sep 2010 Jul 2013

Scientific Computing and Flow Physics Lab

Graduate Research Assistant, supervised by Prof. Eric Johnsen
Sep 2014 Dec 2015
Conduct numerical simulation of compressible homogeneous isotropic turbulence on 4096 cores
Redesigned a parallel 3D Direct Numeric Simulation code using high order finite difference with
central scheme on split convective term to achieve de-aliasing with mvapich2 and HDF5
Upgraded original code with multi-component and hybrid framework with shock-capturing schemes:
WENO-Z, WENO-JS, WENO-Martin, WENO-Central, etc., with Ducros sensor
Evaluated the performance of different WENO schemes for homogeneous isotropic turbulence
Developed a semi-implicit Fourier spectral scheme for Kortewegde VriesBurgers equation
Simulated turbulent mixing in a spherical interface between materials with different densities
Analyzed velocity dynamics of turbulence with turbulent Mach number & bulk viscosity effect
Advanced the understanding of bulk viscosity effect on compressible homogeneous isotropic
turbulence by performing parallel (OpenMP) data analysis with Helmholtz decomposition, budget
analysis, correlation analysis managed by Unix-scripts

Advanced Micro-Fabrication Equipment Inc.

Research Engineer Intern, CAE Department, supervised by Dr. Ning Zhou
Mar 2015 Jul 2015
Led two projects on accurate simulation of rarefied gas flow inside vacuum pump/micro heat transfer
Built quadrilateral/triangle grid meshes tailored to capture separation/strong pressure gradient
region, smooth grid transition, equiangular skewness, and aspect ratio with CFD-GEOM
Evaluated pressure ratio and flow rate numerically by implementing slip-wall conditions, effective
viscosity and Knudsen modification to Navier Stokes equation in user-defined subroutine
Accelerated simulation process more than 100 times by programming a fast transformation of a
customized grid format grid mesh format (NGP) which is crucial to an in-house Monte Carlo
simulation platform
Developed a customized direct simulation Monte Carlo code for microchannel heat transfer
Assisted colleagues using my software and documented user manual for further development

National Lab for Computational Fluid Dynamics

Undergraduate Research Assistant, supervised by Prof. Chun-hian Lee
Sep 2011 Jul 2013
Numerically and analytically studied horizontal injection in to 2D supersonic combustion
Contributed a similarity theory for heat transfer in combustible turbulent boundary layer, which
matches satisfactorily with results from Reyonlds-Averaged-Numerical-Simulation (RANS)
Conducted parallel (MPI) RANS of 2D supersonic mixing combustion of hydrogen and air with
Mach number = 1.2 with SST k for modelling turbulence with flamelet model for combustion
chemistry
Reviewed methods for dividing regions for multi-scale simulation, and devised two new breakdown
parameters based on translational nonequilibrium and compared them along stagnation streamline

Simulated hypersonic rarefied flow over a wedge with adaptive Cartesian multi-subgrid to study
rarefied effect by comparing traditional CFD tools (FLUENT) and a parallel direct simulation
Monte Carlo code independently developed by myself, which showed traditional CFD tools based
on N-S equation cannot accurately predict skin friction, heat transfer
Analyzed the effects of different molecular models on the drag: Variable Hard Sphere,Variable Soft
Sphere(VSS), Generalized Hard Sphere, Generalized Soft Sphere

PROJECTS

Reduced Modelling for Atmosphere Pressure Argon Plasma in Humid Air

Individual course project, instructed by Prof. Mark Kushner
Sep 2015 Dec 2015
Reduced plasma chemistry dynamics by grouping 74 plasma species into a few ground state neutrals,
excited state neutrals and charged species and reactions of major contribution
Simulated reduced plasma system through plug flow model in the flowfield obtained from
compressible homogeneous isotropic turbulence of the mixed Ar, H2 , O2 , H2 O

A Testing Platform for Aircraft Model Stability

Team Lead, instructed by Prof. Zhiqiang Wan
Sep 2011 Mar 2012
Established a real-time sampling & post - visualization graphic code using LABVIEW, in order to
connected computer to strainmeter box
Solved the lack of sensibility of devices and adjustment of thoroughly self-devised strainmeters,
which became a key to the success of the project
